I'm not use to drinking this kind of beer. It was about $18 for a 4-pack. Which is a lot more than the $13 or so I paid for the 6-pack of Guiness. So in essence, I'd have to think of it as an 8-pack. Meaning I could consider it as the same price per beer, if I take twice as long to drink it. Which I would think you would want to take twice as long to drink it, being that it packs more punch in the taste department.
That said, I'm just nearly finished with my first one and I think I like it. I'll wait until I finish the 4-pack before I form an opinion. But it definitely wasn't bad. But so far, my thoughts are that I don't think it would become a go-to beer for me but I could see myself getting it again.
I hope you like it enough to enjoy it, as I hate recommending anything someone doesn't like, but de gustibus and all that jazz, so no worries if you end up not really enjoying it. Like everything else we consume, what beer we enjoy is more personal. It's not like Founders Breakfast was my first, last, and everything, but just ended up being my go-to after years of searching out stouts.
That said, $18 is a shocker. Here in Boston it hovers between $10-11 for a four pack. That would make it much easier to buy and gulp down. I doubt I'd buy it as much if it were nearer $20.
I think we diverge in tastes! I prefer Breakfast to Founder's Porter, though the Porter is a great Porter. But stuff like Old Rasputin I lost interest in. There's some flavor there, perhaps what marurun is alluding to with his cough syrup remark, that I just can't get into anymore. It's like it's masking the alcohol? Hard to say for sure, and it's been many years since I've had one, but I really didn't like the last one I tried.
I do like that Einstok Toasted Porter, though! Great beer if you can get it for a good price. Sadly, they don't sell it up here, but I had many fond times grabbing it from corner drug stores in New York.
Speaking of beers I've not had in a long while, is Southern Tier's Mokah still any good? I used to get hammered on those down at Rattle and Hum, Midtown Manhattan. Fine beer selection if anyone ends up over that way. (I guess that's Note and maybe Ziggy if you get into the city? Definitely not you know who.)
I'll had to add a few of those recommendations to my list (Stillwater Business, Dragon's Milk - haven't had a decent bourbon stout in a while).
Separately from Stouts, I also mentioned to find a six pack of Golden Monkey up here. Gone now, and again out of grasp, it was better on tap anyway, but for $12 it was a steal.
