Brown leaves float along
a river, not together.
We all die alone.

The grasshopper leaps
from a silent mushroom cap;
Life and death in one.

The tin roof is stained
with red rust from acid rain.
Life must be decay.

All that we may have,
material and vapid.
Nothingness endures.

Our edifices
crumble into dust and dirt.
Insignificance.

A golden age is
found only in minds of fools.
But fear lies ahead.

At night the stars shine
down on dirty streets and lives.
We must reach for them.

A cold breeze brings frost
and hints of motor oil.
