I listen to hip hop, amongst other things. I mostly dig jazz rap and indie rap. Tribe Called Quest, Roots, OutKast, Aesop Rock, Deltron 3030, Cannibal Ox, Kool Keith/Dr. Octagon, Jurassic 5. I don't like a lot of mainstream rap, though there are exceptions. I love Busta Rhymes, Beastie Boys, and Macklemore for example.

I used to be obsessed with turntablism and listened to lots of stuff like DJ Qbert, Mix Master Mike, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Psychophonograph Disk, X-ecutioners, etc.

Back in the 80s I used to lay out cardboard in my parents' garage and do my best to breakdance to Grand Master Flash, Whodini, and G.L.O.B.E. & WHIZ KID.

I was a pretty big fan as well..

Four pages in and no mention of the Beastie Boys.

Shame on you all.

The trend I can not stand in today's wolrd of rap are rappers who laugh at their own horrible nonsensical lyrics and have no clue what a metaphor is, but think they're making one.

"We be cruising... PT. Ha ha ha ha!"
"I sprayed her like a hose...garden. Ha ha ha ha!"
"Played her like a game boy...I got game, boy. Ha ha ha ha!"
"I think she go commando...Arnold. Ha ha ha!"

Not clever nor funny. Even LL wrote better lyrics, and as great as he is, I think we can agree he isn't the brightest crayon in the box.

I'm back on an Ice Cube kick. Yeah yeah, "At first I was like"...and all, but I can't think of another hip hop artist who can start off an album with such tension and thunderous beats. Every one of his albums has quite the build up, and *BOOM!* a rage of a beat drops and God damned if you aren't hyped.

Luke, I don't mean to single you out cuz others have already done it, but this is why I hate discussing hip hop. I feel like for whatever reason these conversations are never dudes trying to turn each other on to something they may like and have missed. Instead, they turn into "the guy I like is better than the shit you like" contests. Which is really boring to me.

I thought my post was very balanced. I griped, and then I said:

Alright, well then put me on something I've missed. How was Yeezus? Was he rapping cruel summer style or his older style, cuz I heard people sayin that it was more like his older stuff?

Yeezis isn't really like anything he's done before. It's a very angry, dark, and messy record. It's got a lot of really (for lack of a better word) ugly minimal production and verses that sound somewhat rushed and done in a single take. There's really disorienting moments where strange transitions happen jarringly.

All of that probably sounds like a bad review? Well it's one of my favorite albums of 2013. A description I've used elsewhere is that this sounds like Kanye fronting the band Suicide. Fucking weird, but fucking awesome.
