My wife is allergic (fatally so, as in within 2 hours she is noticeably having a hard time breathing - within 4 hours she needs to leave or risks passing out her airway is so constricted - once she gets to the point, the next 2 days are shot as she recovers - it's basically like recovering from a nasty cold).

My point? I hate you guys and your cats.

Now she wants to punch you, jp.

It isn't cat hair. It's their saliva - and it is on everything.

She investigated shots.

1. our insurance doesn't cover it
2. it's 3-4 shots a week for 2 months, then 1-2 a week for 4 months
3. $45 per shot
4. 3-5 year maintenance program to maintain
5. immunologist said it was truly 50/50 if she would be able to live with cats after treatment. There would be improvement for sure, but not necessarily to the point she could actually live with a cat.

That is the first I've heard of a saliva allergy, that sucks.

Have you tried a dog? Our Boston is great, bit of a stubborn dog to train but just wonderful once you pass that hurdle.

There is also this...

I can speak personally for the Cavalier King Charles and the Toy Poodle, laid back, lap dog material.

I only ask because my wife is a cat person, I prefer dogs, but she was hooked with the Boston since we got her. She seems to fill in for a cat nicely. Now my wife no longer asks for cats, she asks for another Boston Terrier.

Don't ask for a citation, but I want to say 99% of cat allergies are saliva / urine / dead skin, less than 1% are fur.

Wow, I really thought it was usually a dander thing. I guess I'm think of people who get those hairless dogs due to allergies.

Well, dander is just dried, dead, flaking skin - so hairless is no help.

Siberians are supposed to be decent for people with allergies, but it sounds like your wife is borderline asthmatic with cats. My brother has asthma that's triggered by cats; I wouldn't have the cats if I didn't live halfway across the country from him.
