Yeah the PSP version of FFII is the only one I've ever finished, it's definitely solid and a further improvement even over the PSX/GBA ports.

I'm about 20 hours into the PSP version of Tales of Phantasia. I just beat Daos for the 2nd time, and I'm beginning to explore the first town in the new area. Is it worth trying to train up Chester? He did an all-night training session to get to level 23, but we're all level 40, so he's still a bit shit  .

Fun game so far! Gotta say, the story/plot are pretty rough, but this IS the first game in the series, so I can forgive it that. It's fun to play so far, and save for some odd combat quirks (like how enemies at the very edge of the screen seem to be able to dodge attacks more than they should be able to (bug?), and how dodging itself is conufusing (hitboxes?)), the difficulty curve and gameplay have been really fun so far. I JUST found out what the technical ring does, and it lets you play in manual mode, and the game is SO much easier now
(According to something I read online, I think they may've made it appear way earlier in the game for this port, but I'm not 100% on that).

Well, the main bosses did have a warp out. But for other quests like the marsh cave and the ice cave... those runs were always epic (win or lose).

Gotta link one of my favorite sites for the original FF playthroughs:

Only hardcore FF players will likely find it as engaging, but I absolutely love Sulla's play by plays.
Mine would't be as interesting but I have some party parameter ideas of my own.

...Aaannddd I lost my main save for Lufia  .
I have another save a few hours back (at least), but am kinda bummed about it.
Was using a Super UFO Pro 8 to backup my game and save and it did unmentionable things to my 1st save slot.
BAD UFO!!!
I know most people hate the thing anyways, but this is the 1st time it has disappointed me so far. I like it for the most part even with its nuances.

The main plan was using the UFO to backup my sav file, then copying it to my PSP to play Lufia on a road trip. If it works well (and I don't stay upset about it), maybe I can get back to where I was.

WOW! I played the ENTIRE game and never warped out of the main bosses, as I never knew I could. Geez. Also, thanks for the link, I am always down for reading up on old school FF. Here is my contribution, which you probably already know about these, but the write ups from SMPS is something I really enjoy reading through.

Well, there's your leveling anyways.

Yeah, that's definitely a favorite site of mine too.
Can't remember everything I like there, but definitely remember the SNES and Genesis shmup sections.

I think I liked the bad box art and f'd up moments in NES games articles.

Finished Tales of Phantasia earlier today, but I'm still in the mood for more Tales. I think I may start Tales of Eternia tomorrow (again). While there IS a Japanese PSP port on the PSN store, I don't really wanna pay 25 bucks for what is effectively a 16:9 version of a game I already own that now I can play with a PS3 controller. It's gonna be weird playing in a 4:3 ratio again

I prefer 4:3, assuming it was originally designed for it. Most of my screens are old CRT's though.
That's the only Tales game I have played (ToD II) so far. Never beat it (yet, still have the save and a Strategy Guide to figure where the heck I left off), but got to the 3rd disc. The UNO-like minigame was a nice bonus.

I've played the original so many times, I don't need to read anything really (just memorize placing).

FFII on famicom, I'm not sure if I'll ever get through. That game benifitted most from the remake upgrades to me and I really need to continue my play on the PSP port (beat it on PS1 over a decade ago).

I agree on FF I as I beat it on PSP and NES. The NES version is cool to me, as it has some odd quirks but is really neat to experience. I know there were a LOT of RPGs before the NES FFI, but they (1987 Square) did a lot of things right and I feel like a lot of aspects still hold up. Also, I agree that the Charges systems is better than implementing MP like the remakes did. It made the whole strategy of a dungeon crawl much more different, and I also liked how you had to crawl your way back out once you beat the boss.

For FF II I know it will be difficult, but I am hoping to get my stats through the roof, and then take on the game, which I realize is "cheating" but I actually like aspects of games like this. When you can "beat" the computer at its own game/system, sorta. It is why I still love Morrowind, since there is not cap for fortifying and you can easily bring your intelligence through the roof, and then make ridiculous spells.

Beat FF2 on the GBA a few years back. Once you have the Berserk spell, you can pretty much abuse it all you want and finish boss battles within a couple minutes.

Anyways, started Final Fantasy IV: The After Years yesterday. Got pretty far on the Wii years ago. Now if only I can put this much effort into Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Well, now that I have finished Anvil of Dawn, I am moving on to Gothic 2. I beat the first a couple of years ago and am looking forward to getting back to the Gothic universe.
