I am currently playing a eShop game titled Kung Fu Rabbit. Amazingly - and despite the fact that it is a 2D platformer - it uses a "bump the enemy from behind" attack system. I immediately thought of Ys (and how I should probably be playing it instead).

I'll look into it. I have a couple of eShop bucks left kicking around.

"Bump platformers" are a pretty rare breed. The original Popful Mail (on PC-88) actually uses a bump system - the button combat was added to the console ports.
