Re: Fixing up some old 486'es! (Ram and bios issues)
Maybe one of those PCI diagnostic cards could return a useful error code and help you figure out the problem. There's a bunch of them on Deal Extreme. Unfortunately this machine is strictly ISA only, but even then it's old enough that there's no plug and play support in the bios for PCI either if i...

Fixing up some old 486'es! (Ram and bios issues)
Recently I've been bitten by the DOS bug and have gone out in search of a nice system to both play old DOS titles on, and also have proper period correct compatibility with any old ISA sound cards I may wish to use. It took me a bit but eventually I ended up with quite a few different machines and p...

Re: Best third party GameCube controller?
Unfortunately official Gamecube controllers are expensive, especially the Wavebird. As much as I'd like to have an official Nintendo brand GameCube controller, they are just too expensive. So, what is the best 3rd party controller that I could get for relatively cheap? Go for a brand new official G...

Re: SNES Black Screen/Won't read games
It's most likely bad caps (or smaller surface mount caps) on one of the boards. Because the SNES isn't a system known to have caps fail most people don't know what to do if it happens and as a result the symptoms aren't widely known. Unfortunately I've seen plenty of good, clean and non-discolored c...

Re: What car do you drive?
I like the color, it's the same as Walt's Aztek! I wish it was an Aero, but alas it's a 2.5i Linear. Mine's a 2006 and apparently that year they were pretty rare regardless of trim, so I'm glad I found one at all. But hey, at least it's a stick and has all sorts of nice Saab options like butt warme...

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
I'm not exactly writing it off, I simply hope that they actively create added value prospects for the machine besides just the retro-emulation. Something like providing access to an SDK and allowing open development/modification of the emulators or custom software. That would not only give the conso...

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
So in other words it's an emulator with a cartridge port? Why pay for what you can get free? The same argument could be made for all retro gaming. True, but what I'm mainly saying is that the price of the hardware you buy is seemingly all going to enjoy a particular version of the retro gaming expe...

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
^ The SNES won't wear out as easily or quickly as a disc-based system, for sure. But it still can go out form usage. Chips can short out, things can overheat, and cords and soldering can come loose. I've been through 2 different Commodore 64s because of chips shorting out (and I'm talking the base ...

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
I use original hardware (except recording, then it's SNES9x) but I'd like to be able to retire my original SNES from December '91 while it still works. I just dread the day it doesn't turn on or doesn't work, that would just destroy me. May have to see how the Retron 5 looks. You can't and won't br...
