Racketboy Asks: What Classic Console Do You Play Most?
My goal with this little site it to provide a place that is as useful and practical as possible for anyone that is looking to build upon or maximize their classic gaming collection. However, since we have such a diverse readership here, I thought it might be a good idea to run a poll every now and then to see what consoles you have the most interest in – either that you currently have or what you plan on getting in the future.
This is the first in a series of polls that I’ll post every now and then. I’m curious

Actually, it shifts between the classic consoles of the early 80s. Atari 2600, Atari 800 Home Computer (but still one of the greatest gaming machines ever), Intellivision, Colecovision. Since only one was on the list, I chose “other”.
N64. I emulate the other systems when I want to play them, but I don’t have the hardware to hook an N64 controller up to my PC, and N64 emulation still isn’t anywhere near as good as other systems anyway.
I wanted to say the Genesis or Saturn, but that wouldn’t be the truth. I think I play more PS1 games on my PS2 than anything.
The Dreamcast has gotten a lot of attention from me over the last few months. If my N64 was functional, I’d be playing No Mercy instead of MvC2 and NBA 2k2 right now.
I chose N64 because it has the nostalgia factor for me as it was my first console and i’d really like to start building up my collection again. I’d also like to see some more TG-16/PCE (specifically the imports games as I dont think many non-japanese readers know a whole lot about what it has to offer).
Sega Saturn for the past 6 months or so, N64 for 6 months before that, something else before that. It changes so often.
But really, I’ve been playing with my Apple IIgs more than anything else. Technically a computer, but it sure feels like a game console.
It’ll shift around, but I’d say I spend a lot more time on average with my SNES than any of these others. Always have, and I likely always will.
Don’t own a Saturn, but plan to buy it soon.
PS2 would dominate this list

i havent stopped playing my DC since 9.9.99 when i got it… i play a lot of genesis (the real console and emulated on the PSP), but the DC is still number one!!!
rather supprising to see the megadrive outbeat the nes, growing up with the mega-drive i have always felt sort of like an outsider, all anyone ever talks about is the snes/nes when quite frankly, a lot of people are missing out on a lot of fantastic megadrive games.
Dreamcast by far. Played some Soul Caliber this afternoon.
Neo geo lately (usually my #3) behind Genesis/Saturn. This list accounts for the last 2 or so years of gaming I’ve done
My SNES and NES get the most use out of the ones on that list.
But really I play my original Xbox the most.
My Dreamcast is broken… otherwise that would be the one. Emulated SNES on my (hacked up) Wii is the current winner.

Erm…the poll is claiming that I voted for Super Nintendo, despite the fact that I haven’t even voted. Anyway, my vote truly goes to Dreamcast.

My most played classic is NES, followed by SNES.

It was a tough choice between the Saturn and the Dreamcast, but since my Saturn shares the tv connection with the PS2 I usually end up playing more Dreamcast
If the Dreamcast is on the list the PS2 should be also. Since PS2 isn’t on the list, I can’t vote!

Dreamcast by far! My favorite console ever! I had a blast playing Ikaruga, Power Stone 2, Guilty Gear X, and Sega Rally 2, Virtua Tennis, Mr. Driller, and oddly enough, Seaman with my girlfriend and her brother yesterday. Great times!
Dreamcast > Genesis(/CD) > Saturn > PlayStation > Master System > Super Nintendo > Nintendo 64… don’t own any of the other ones mentioned.
My choice would be SNES, followed by N64. If they were asking which systems I play most period, it would be PC followed by Xbox 360.
I voted Genesis/Mega Drive. To be honest, it’s the only console I’ve played in a while, for the most part. Whenever I’m in a gaming mood, it’s generally the first place I look.
That being said, I’d say I’m more interested in the NES at the moment – just when I think I know all the great titles out there, I find another hidden gem.
I love the DREAMCAST! Best system period. Sega needs to get on the Dreamcast 2! My Dreamcast(s) still get a lot of playtime. Yesterday, I was on my DC playin Wind and Water Power Battles, Outtrigger and Propeller Arena. I have found that Dreamcast has provided the best simple gameplay out there to date. The games play like games and feel like a game, nothing more. When the Dreamcast was pumpin out games, developers had/have pasion for the games and the system and thats why its been such a solid system. Long live the Dreamcast! Give us Dreamcast 2 Sega!

I voted for the 2600, as I don’t consider the Dreamcast or Playstation to be “classic” yet.
The popularity of Dreamcast never ceases to amaze me. Judging by the results of this thing so far, the Genesis is sorely underrated. Strange that Sega’s most successful console could be underrated among retro gamers, but that’s where we are now.
Then again, maybe it’s because Dreamcast is hardly retro, what with how it’s only a generation old. It was part of the PS2/Xbox/GC generation.
I went with the SNES. It has some of my favorite A/A+ titles and a lot of good stuff in between. I find myself playing it more often than my other classic consoles.

I chose snes though, not that i like it more than other systems it just happens to be what i’ve been playing most of… probably coz of all the great translated games available online.
Anyone find it ironic that Saturn is beating PS1?
I picked Genesis only because Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection has been taking up so much of my time.
But I swear, if I owned a Neo Geo I would be all over that!

Not really. Most of us got most of our fill of PS1 due to it being the leader. Now, we’re working backwards to get all those unique Saturn games that have never been ported to other consoles.

I should think the Dreamcast belongs more to the PSX/N64/Saturn generation than the PS2/GCN/Xbox generation. Dreamcast died almost as soon as PS2 hit (In the West), and it never even saw direct competition with GCN or Xbox.

^ Gotta disagree with this, Dreamcast is apart of the Sixth Generation of consoles. Problem with it is that it only had a 2 year “official” lifespan and a 10+ year unofficial lifespan.

While it did never see direct competition it’s still considered part of that generation. I would’ve voted PS2 in a heartbeat if it was on the list.

Why does the Dreamcast get so much attention?
N64, then SNES and MD about equally.

Many reasons:
1. Great titles
2. High Entertainment value
3. Being the Underdog
4. You can do a lot with it (Emulators / Homebrews)
5. Huge online Community of fans
6. Its Cheap
7. Collectors item
8. Games are still coming out for it (Redspotgames.com / Hucast.com)

The right way to ask the question would’ve been, why does the Dreamcast get more attention than the SNES and Genesis? The system was out for what? Less than two years? Yet it seems that many people prefer its modest library to the sizeable ones of the 16-bit juggernauts. N64 fans make the argument that quality over quantity made it a great console, but that console doesn’t get nearly the respect that Dreamcast gets. It’s strange how both systems are RPG-starved and yet only the N64 gets criticized for it. The Dreamcast has somehow been propelled to legendary status over the past decade, and I’m not sure why. It must be the only console that “failed” and yet often finds itself mentioned among the best of all time. Amazing. The only similar situation I can think of is what happened with the TV show Firefly.
^ See the problem with your thesis is that you believe its a failure when as stated in my above post its far from it. I don’t want to defend the DC too much since I have already been drooling over it already but it seems that I’m forced to now since you just used the F-word. “Failed” and in a historical sense its completely inaccurate. The Dreamcast was never a failure for as you can see its on the top of the list, everyone who is a gamer has one, and games are still coming out for it. Also the DC was not RPG starved in any way. It had a multitude of RPGs but the only ones that ever get mentioned are Grandia II and Skies of arcadia.
I think the poll says it all anyway. How can something be a failure and be on the top of the list. It just defies logic.
PS1, N64, Genesis, Saturn, SNES, Arcade games, all on my computer. I have all of the real hardware listed except for those Arcade cabinets (>_>), but since I switch between them too much and can’t count on cartridge batteries, the lifespan of the consoles themselves, and I can’t keep plugging them back and forth due to limited inputs. So one S-video cable to the TV from the computer does everything I want it too. As for the N64, I rather emulate it as well due to the better graphics and the fact that that I have 1.7 plus Glide 64 which runs every game I threw at it with almost no problems. Saves wear on my TV inputs since without them, the TV is useless to me, and keeps everything in place. Just kinda longing to play some RPGs on my PS2, but that is not going anywhere.
I actually play more oXbox games then anything else. But I still have my Sega CD/Genesis/32x hooked up. Along with my Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2, oXbox, and 360. And only with my Dreamcast and PS2 do I have to switch out the RCA’s by hand to play.
Not to bad since I’m running a 42″ LCD 1080p with limited RCA options now a days.
I mostly play my ps1 games on my ps2 console.Then next would be Super Gameboy/Super Nes,Sega Saturn.

In all I am a huge gamer ! My all-time favorite system is the Sega Saturn. So I have played that the most as far as old school systems. I do play my NES,Genisis,SNES,Turbo Grafx16,N64,Dreamcast,Xbox,Gamecube,360 & Wii a lot too !
Last year I got a Virtual Fighter 2 arcade machine for my game room. All systems have their stand out , exclusive games. So I try to get as many systems and the best games for them ! Even the games I have on my Wii virtual console, aren’t good. But they don’t beat playing the games on the original systems and original controllers.

Wow, tell me how the Dreamcast was RPG-starved when it had classics like Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue, and Omikron: the Nomad Soul as well as action-RPG hybrid EGG and shmup-RPG hybrid Armada. It also housed the decent Evolution series; I don’t know anything about the game Silver, but it too was on the Dreamcast. Also, a port of Baldur’s Gate had been in the works for the system before its demise. Not a very valid argument, sir.
Also, regarding your statement about the N64’s quality over quantity – here’s the thing about the Dreamcast: it had both. Never before, and never again will gamers see such an absolute explosion of triple-A titles, oozing with innovation and personality, in such a ludicrously short period of time. In the five years the N64 was on the market (Super Mario was released in 1996, Paper Mario was released in 2001), the N64 produced roughly half the amount of critically-acclaimed titles as the Dreamcast did in two and half (Sonic Adventure was released in late 1999, Rez was released in early 2002). Thus, logically speaking, the Sega Dreamcast is twice as good of a system as the N64 was.
Well, at least the Dreamcast had two big RPGs in Skies of Arcadia and Grandia 2. More than you can say about the N64.
Also, in my mind, many of the best N64 games were replicated and/or improved on Nintendo’s subsequent consoles while many Dreamcast classics remain exclusives.
Also, the affordability of the Dreamcast (and the ability to play burned discs) probably improves its replayability.

i dont actually still hav my dreamcast but i play the emulator even though i hav a ds psp ps2 and xbox not 360
to me the sega consoles will never die after all the losses after heavy competition and problems like production and Sega is still in the gaming business making some of the best games for other consoles if they made a new console then they will hav some of the best games
