People Actually Want 2D

Just a quick thing that I thought was interesting — I was watching the Nintendo E3 2005 Press Conference DS/GBA Demo Showcase video found on this page at IGN and I noticed the two games that got, by far, the biggest cheers from the audience was not a 3D game like Metroid Prime Hunters, but two 2D games — the new Super Mario game and the Castlevania game for the DS. It’s not because they are heavily hyped or because it’s just a Mario and Castlevania game (Mario Kart DS didn’t even get much of a cheer). It’s because they are great games that sticked to the formula that is proven to be the most effective format for the genres — 2D. Not the most trendy — but the most enjoyable. Imagine that.
