What Is The Best Mega Man Game of All Time?

While I love the forum here to death, I thought it would be cool to occasionally ask all the regular readers and those passing through their opinions about popular topics every now and then.

In this first installment of “Racketboy Asks”, I’d like to have everyone fight over which of the many Mega Man installments is the best (not counting the yet-to-be-released Mega Man 9).  Since you may have more than one favorite, you can vote for up to three games.

Since there are so many Mega Man games and I didn’t want to exclude anything, I condensed some of the later spin-off games into one entry for each series.  Also, if you enjoyed a remake of a certain installment, please vote for the original.  Of course, you can explain your reasoning in the comments section if you desire.

What Is The Best Mega Man Game? (vote for up to 3)

You’ve split every game of the classic and X-Series, but you merged the rest… This isn’t fair, i think :)

At the topic: I personally liked the zero-games most.

Mega Man X is listed twice.
I chose X 6 because that’s the only one I have. That game has really great music.

Crap accidentally voted for X8 instead of 8. Might want to change it if one vote matters to you.

    And, great poll.

  5. I can never decide whether 5, 3, or 2 is the best. Thanks for letting me choose three games so I didn’t have to finally decide.

  6. I voted for both Mega Man X’s listed, as Mega Man X is easily my favorite Mega Man game. XD

  7. I don’t like how you’ve bundled the GBA games together and not included the GB games. Mega Man V GB was excellent.

Only one vote is needed: Mega Man 2

You are missing Mega Man Powered Up and Mega Man Maverick Hunter X.

  10. megaman 2 hands down. It still as good today as it was back in the day.

  11. Sorry it took me so long to fix — I was at work.
I’ve combined the two Mega Man X entries.
I’ll work on expanding the most popular series into indv entries.

Were the Gameboy ones different than the NES ones (other than the graphics)?

As for the PSP ones, they are remakes, so you should vote for the original (but I guess I could add the remake title in there)

The GB versions were completely different.

Also, how long will we have to vote? So far I only have Anniversary Collection.

  13. Mega Man Network Transmission isn’t on the list. Sure, its storyline is part of the Battle Network continuity, but the gameplay is completely different; it’s not an RPG at all, it’s simply the Battle Network characters in a 2D run-and-gun setting like the original.

  14. I don’t plan on closing the poll for a while
Thanks for your input, everyone — I’ll be tweaking this.
So many games and I’m far from a Mega Man expert :)

  15. It’s all about Mega Man 2. There is just something satisfying about being able to chuck buzzing saw blades at anything and everything.

Mega Man 2 is truly my favorite, though 1 and 3 were also very good. 2 also had the best Mega Man soundtrack. Mega Man X was a close runner up, but I didn’t like the music as much.

megaman 2 takes the cake for sure due to the excellent soundtrack, but i also really loved X1

btw, x3 was hard as hell if you didnt get all the upgrades

Whoever voted for X7 is officially on my list of terrible people. Finding the game somewhat enjoyable is an offense punishable by severe face punchings. Finding it the BEST? Not cool. I will find you.

I voted X. The SNES original still beats out the rest of the series in gameplay, and the soudtrack is unforgettable. I want to get a PSP so I can try out the remake.

It has to be X as it got the balance just right in that it could be completed in one sitting but never got frustrating due to akward replenishing enemies and disappearing platforms.

Also the story is decent good vs. evil tale and introduces us to Zero (who is a much better 2nd string character than Bass).

I gotta get Mega Man X collection on the gamecube, I’m from the UK so anyone know if there is a freeloader that works on the Wii which hasn’t been overcome with updates?

megaman x and megaman 2 are the two best megaman games ever. both took the series to new HEIGHTS!!!

  24. Had to go with MM2, MMX, and MMX4 being what I consider the 3 most noticeable high points in the franchise.

  25. i chose x4 and 8 because i used to play the shit out of them on saturn!! but also i dont see rockman forte which is awesome..

  26. oh i see it now nevermind.

I only recently was able to really play Mega Man 2 for the first time, and now I finally see why it’s so popular. Even so, I’m afraid the original X just hits the magic formula for me on all levels.

I chose Mega Man II & X. For me they are the best ever, but I can’t choose one over the other.

I’m hoping that Mega Man IX turns out great.

Mega Man X4, the japanese Saturn version with the GOOD voice acting. Amped up the look and sound of the MM X games. Totally changed up the gameplay with Zero. Gave two paths through the story and that awesome anime cutscene with Zero/Sigma

    I picked MM6, MMX2, and MMX3.

X3 is my favorite out of all of them because it’s probably the toughest Megaman game out of all of them (Yes. Even 2)

X2 was quite simply all around great. From the Music to the Graphics (the last boss was in 3D) to the Gameplay.

6 is no. 3 because it had really great music, some of the best graphics on NES, and it was very underappreciated.

    If I had a 4th choice, I would’ve picked MM2 :)

I voted MM2(NES), MMV(GB) and MMX(SFC). Mega Man V for the Game Boy is an extremely overlooked game that deserves much more recognition. Yeah, it may be one of the most expensive GB games there is, but I’d actually say it is worth it.

I’m really sad that there isn’t more love for “Mega Man 7.” To me, that game really had a lot of magic. But, I admit, nostalgia colors my opinion quite a bit in this case.

    I’ve chosen Megaman 2, 3 and 4.

    Megaman 2: Simply the best!
Megaman 3: Long, long game and return of the yellow monster
Megaman 4: Only to listen to Dust Man’s music

I’ve played every one of these games including the classic gameboy titles. If you haven’t played Mega Man V, it is one of the best games in the series. It’s so unlike the rest of the games. I find myself still playing Mega Man 2 nearly twenty years later and still enjoying it like I did when I was 4. I also put a lot of hours into the first X game. The best games most probably haven’t played are Mega Man’s III, IV and V for the gameboy.

Honestly, MM2 is overrated. I mean, don’t get me wrong: it’s a FANTASTIC game. Still, while it was one of the biggest steps and probably the most important game for the series, that doesn’t automatically make it the best. It still had its share of planning issues, generic bosses, and basically no story of which to speak. Again, that doesn’t mean it’s not a brilliant game, because it is! But it’s the far-and-away pinnacle that some voters (and the vote totals) are making it out to be.

I personally prefer Mega Man 3, as the story started to unfold a little more; meanwhile, the slide was a simple addition that changed the gameplay of the series from that point forward. The Robot Masters were more imaginative, and the difficulty was right on par, not quite as imbalanced as MM2 could be. Also, I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of the chargeable Mega Buster and am glad than MM9 went back to the basic pellet gun. My reason is that it’s TOO useful; a fully-charged shot is powerful enough for basically any enemy, including bosses, and nearly everything is susceptible to it. That and I think we can all admit to always having the damn thing charged, which means that blaring charge noise was always going, and Mega Man was always flashing. Seizures ahoy!

Among the X games, X1 and X4 are rightfully ahead of the others. X1 was simply the innovative reinvention that the series needed to step into the 16-bit era, and X4 gave the series another beautiful facelift while, perhaps more importantly, providing a story that players could really sink their teeth into. X2 and X3, while good, felt like extensions of X1 rather than proper sequels, and the games after X4 really started to lose that classic “Mega Man feel.” (I remember playing X5 and thinking, “I know I’m playing Mega Man right now, but something is seriously amiss.”) Maverick Hunter X made the best even better by updating the graphics, fleshing out the plot even further, and adding the fresh and inventive Vile mode. I can only hope that Maverick Hunter X2 is eventually released.

As for the Game Boy games, Mega Man V is the clear standout: the first Game Boy game to truly be an original. That the game was able to go against some of the most basic tenets of the series (no “Fill-in-the-Blank Man” Robot Masters, the premiere of the Mega Arm, the fact that Dr. Wily isn’t the final boss) and yet feel as natural to fans of the Blue Bomber as any other is a testament to its greatness.

Also, I have a soft spot for MM5 that is inexplicable. I think it’s just that I liked walking on the ceiling in Gravity Man’s level.

Oops. In the first paragraph, I meant to say, “But it’s NOT the far-and-away pinncale…” Sorry if it made that paragraph confusing.
