Ikaruga and Rez HD Confirmed For XBox Live Arcade

There has been speculation and rumors about these two titles for quite a while, both Ikaruga and Rez have been officially announced for XBox Live Arcade. That’s right, Microsoft has already shown off screens of the two games at their presentation at the Tokyo Game Show Pre-Show.
(see my previous XBLA rumor coverage: Rez / Ikrauga)
As you can see from the slide, this is in addition to previously announced games such as Every Extend Extra Extreme, Trigger Heart Exelica, Exit and Omega Five. Truely, this is going to bee a shmuper’s paradise.
Rez HD
Rez HD should take full advantage of the 360 visual capabilities and should hopefully blow away even a VGA-equipped Dreamcast in terms of high-resolution goodness. Of course, it will support wide-screen and Dolby 5.1 surround sound. You can see the full set of HD screenshots on my Rez HD Flickr set
Ikaruga
Being a vertical shooter, Ikaruga will still be stuck with large black boxes on the side of TVs (unless screen rotate support is added), so you may not be able to enjoy as much of the shmups glory as with Rez HD. To be honest, I’m a little disappointed that they went with Ikaruga while ignoring it’s older sibling Radiant Silvergun. As I mentioned in the forum post, Ikaruga is playable on the Dreamcast, Gamecube, and Wii, while Radiant Silvergun is still a Saturn exclusive. I guess that still gives Saturn owners something to brag about, but bringing the games to new players should be important.

Note: The Ikaruga screenshot is just a mock-up based on existing ports. At the time of this posting, the only real screenshot is available in the slide shown above.

Oh. Pretty pictures. Much better than my crappy little announcement.
I wish I had linked this originally, ah well it’s linked now at the Dreamcast Junkyard.
And yes Saturn people DO have something to brag about…
Damn, now I need to try my luck with a 360, Rez HD will be phenomenal. Once the good cooling units are the vast majority I will hop on and buy all these, Castle Crashers, and the Alien Hominid PDA game.
I still have the Saturns, though the nag of “one more” keeps biting.
Rez HD… And with two analog sticks… What could ever beat this?
Rez on Wii with the Wiimote doing the targeting and aiming could possibly beat that. And since the graphics are heavily stylized and abstract, I think the HD will benefit it less than many other titles.
I do not want Radiant Silvergun to ever be released on arcade.
Im a proud owner and i want its mystic legacy to continue and be out of reach for most people.
I dont mind ikaruga being in arcade, but Radiant Silvergun has to be played on a sega saturn to be fully appreciated.
What they pulled of on the saturn is totally amazing, and played on a xbox 359 gives a de-sensitization affect for the game.
I never heard the rumours about this occuring so this has completely blown me off my seat. Geeze.
I guess you need to read my site more
Although, I don’t know if you started reading at the beginning of 2007.
Ah, yes, Marurun… you could be right…
I hope this means I’ll now be able to get a copy of Ikaruga for GameCube for less than $30!
why everibody keeps saying Radiant Silvergun is Saturn exclusive, when its available for arcades and fully playable in MAME (with some minor sound bugs). in fact, i prefer the arcade version because its less than 5MB, while the Saturn version is almost a CD ripoff (5MB x 100
)
it looks like the ‘effects’ on rez (glowy bits in the background) are using a low res version still so y’know, i don’t see it looking that much better. although the widescreen aspect looks neat.
This is great. Two games I will absolutely pick up for XBLA. Rez is awesome but I no longer have my Dreamcast; and Ikaruga – I was just playing around with emulators trying to get the DC version working but it was far from perfect.
Ikaruga is my favorite shooter ever, well actually tied with Einhander.

I disagree. If anything, due to the fact that Rez is mostly of vector-ish graphics, the higher resolution will make a huge difference. Look at JSRF on the Xbox, then on the 360 – *BIG* difference, even though the graphics themselves are relatively simple.
