Retro Roundup: Best of April 2008

Retro Roundup - Best of April 2008

With old-school gaming catching on more in both the modern, mainstream gaming market and the traditional, classic console aftermarket there is a lot of interesting topics and developments going on. Since I don’t have time to cover them all in detail, I hope to start having a monthly round-up of the most interesting happenings that I haven’t already covered in full. I’ve also included a Racketboy Rewind section that takes a look at my favorite articles from a year ago from this past month.

In The News

Behind-the-Scenes: Rebalancing Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

The Capcom Digital blog has been running a long but fascinating series of articles from David Sirlin, detailing the changes they have made to the rebalanced mode of the new Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix project. Not only does it provide some interesting insight to what is going on behind-the-scenes, but it gives harcore fighitng geeks a bit more to think about the granddaddy of fighters.

Bionic Commando Rearmed Multiplayer Demostrated

As if the new 2D release of Bionic Commando on the XBox Live Arcade and PSN wasn’t amazing enough, new footage was released of the game’s multiplayer modes. 1UP had the exclusive and its looks pretty good. Nothing mind-blowing, but an added dimension to a wonderful classic is always appreciated.

A New Look at 1942: Joint Strike

Capcom definately seems to be one of the few big publishers that “gets it” when it comes to their old-school fans. 1942 is their classic shmup franchise that they are also bring back to life on the modern download services. This recently Capcom blog post gives us more insight into what to expect from the upcoming “Joint Strike”

Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 + Street Fighter HD Remix Beta trailer

You may have seen a few screenshots of the upcoming Commando game, but now you can see it in motion. Capcom just released a new trailer for the games that also happens to show some footage of SSF2THDR at the end. Enjoy!

Super Genintari 4-in-1 Console – Nintendo, SEGA, and Atari

I always get a kick out of machines that are combinations of classic consoles. The Super Genintari is the latest combo mod by Richard DaLuz, that is a mix of Atari 2600, NES, Genesis and SNES enclosed in a retro-80s bronze acrylic case, “formed and shaped on a homemade stript heater.”

Original Soul Calibur Coming to XBLA Later This Year

The original Soul Calibur was one of the best Dreamcast games of all time and was a beauty to behold even at its 1999 release. Now the full game is being released on the XBox Live Arcade. It will be a high-definition release, so if you have HDMI, Component, or VGA on your 360, it might actually look better than the Dreamcast version with the VGA Box.

Unboxing the Super Famicom Classic Controller

As usual, Japan beats the rest of the world as Wii owners over there get the Super Famicom (SNES) Classic Controller. It’s available exclusively to Club Nintendo members. Somehow, I’m guessing that we’ll never see this offered in the States or elsewhere. However, I’m surprised that there haven’t been more specialized Virtual Console controllers out there (N64, Genesis, etc)

Nintendo Wii Classic Controller Alternatives

If you want to stick with controllers that we can find outside of Japan, Racketboy contributer, Daniel Primed
takes a look at many of the conventional and unconventional play methods availible to Wii owners.

Nintendo Wii Virtual Console games just ROMS and HTML files?

For the Wii hackers out there, Virtual Console games have been fully dumped, decrypted, and extracted. As expected, there are ROMS in the virtual console games and they are playable in existing PC emulators. Most of all, the documentation for a virtual console game that is viewable on the Nintendo Wii is just a bunch of HTML files.

Game Focus

Hardcore Gaming 101: Rastan

A retrospective of Taito’s Conan the Barbarian style action game, popularized by the Master System game. Also includes a look at its dreadful sequel, the obscure beat-em-up Warrior Blade, and the awful pseudo-revival (in Japan, at least) Barbarian.

Why You Should Buy the Original Metal Gear Solid over Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

With the pending release of Metal Gear Solid 4 for the Playstation 3 and the recent release of the 20th Anniversary pack discussion has reignited about which version of Metal Gear Solid should players new to the series pick up. On one hand there is the original PSone classic and on the other hand there is the Gamecube remake; MGS: The Twin Snakes. Racketboy contributer, Daniel Primed compares the two on his own blog.

Hardcore Gaming 101: Golvellius

Another Sega game that actually began life on the MSX, Golvellius is an excellent Zelda-style game. Also includes a look at its obscure MSX2 follow-up, Super Cooks.

Action Button: Bangai-O Spirits Critique

Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation might get all of attention for being an overly-opinionated reviewer, but Action Button is a nice lo-fi alternative. One of the latest reviews covers the new Bangio-O game on the Nintendo DS. As you can tell from the colorful verbage, the game should appeal to harcore gamers.

Hardcore Gaming 101: Legend of Kage

Taito’s 1985 arcade game about high-jumping ninjas has a bad rap amongst a lot of retro fans, but put in the right context, it’s actually a lot of fun. Also includes a look at its recent DS sequel.

Racketboy Rewind

Maximus Arcade: Multi-Platform Emulator Front-End for Windows Media Center

I’m still running this on my Media Center PC and loving it!

The Lost Levels: Ultimate Test of 2D Super Mario Bros Skill

Love Mario but need a challenge? Look no further.

The Best Undiscovered Nintendo Gamecube Games

The Hidden Gems series has been quite popular on this site, and while there weren’t a lot of true gems on the Gamecube, I ran down the best of the ones some people may have missed.

Nice! I really dig this and I’m happy you included the Hardcore Gaming 101 reviews. This is great for people with A.D.D. who don’t have time to sift through all the gaming news.

  2. I wonder if we(Australia or even the UK) will see the SNES pad down here as we also have a similiar rewards system going on at the moment.

I like how you are linking back to some of your old content too, this place is a real treasure trove of information. I recommend that other viewers dig through the archives themselves. I did particularly enjoy your commentaries on Lost Levels BTW, great stuff.

Thanks for the link outs too, its very generous of you RB. :)

These should be mentioned as a virtual console controller alternative.

I got the SNES cords and they work great. Some of my friends complain about having a wired controller now that they’re used to wireless but I don’t really find it a problem.

  4. Great idea for a monthly review. This is very helpful for finding some of those articles I missed during the last month. I will look forward to this every month for sure.

Having VC games as roms is all fine and dandy, it’s Nintendo’s proprietary emulators that matter anyway. Find a way to extract those from the Wii and we’re in business

  6. I see you couldn’t care less about the discovery of a sequel to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and its story… Oh well…

  7. Oh crap — I forgot to include your links!
I’m very sorry — I’ll try to stick them in there tonight.
