Metal Slug Anthology Controls Revealed for the Nintendo Wii

We already knew that the Metal Slug Anthology was going to be the hottest Wii release for retro gamers, but up until now, we weren’t really sure how the compilation for SNK would make use of the Wii’s unique motion-sensing controller.

Of course, you can use your Gamecube controllers on the Wii or the “Retro” Wii controller for a standard console experience, but the Wii-mote also supports five nontraditional schemes. (See below for video footage of each)

  • “Nunchuk Control Stick” - movement and fire controlled with Nunchuk; grenades tossed by flicking Wiimote
  • “Tilt Wii Remote” - tilts control movement; d-pad “up” to jump.
  • “Wii Remote” - classic controls; flick to toss grenades.
  • “Arcade” - using the Wii-mote as a pseudo-joystick; nunchuk fires and jumps (flick it for grenades)
  • “Nunchuk Only” - Nunchuk controls everthing except weapon switch and alternate attack.

I’d really have to give them a try to really see if it would be that intuitive, but I have to admit the Arcade mode looking interesting.

Overall, the development studio seems to be thinking creatively about what is possible with the controller combinations and a range of dependance on the motion-sensing, but at this point it almost seems like an experiment. Eventually developers porting older games to the Wii should figure out the most efficient way to control the game and stick with that instead of confusing gamers with a fury of options.

On the other hand, these various control methods would be great for competitions and for people who already beat the game a couple dozen times. It is another way for players to test their gaming abilities.

Anyway, here is the video footage of each control scheme demostrated, as promised:
