Compact & Foldable Gamepads For On The Go

I don’t know how many of you are traveling around or roaming campus with your laptop, but if you like to emulate your classic games on the go, you probably have noticed that it is a pain to pack a full-size gamepad in your bag along with its sprawling cable.

Thanks to ForeverGeek, I stumbled across two different controller solutions for traveling emulation junkies. First of all Buffalo Technologies (normally known for top-notch Wifi gear) will soon be releasing two variations of a foldable gaming pad. Your other option is an already-availible clone from Geekstuff4U.

The layout of each of the controllers are most similar to and SNES contoller, but with an extra pair of “trigger” buttons on the top. They fold down in the middle on the controller and include a detachable USB cable that winds up on its own, so not only is the controller easy to pack up and transport, but the cable won’t make a mess either.

Since the controller is modeled after the SNES layout, both of Nintendo’s first two systems will work quite well. Genesis games should adapt fairly well unless you need a nice six-button layout for a fighting game or something. However, if you are planning on playing more complex Playstation or N64 games, you might have a bit more of a challenge, but that is the tradeoff for convenience.

    Hi,

I would like to add a good portable solution for six button Sega-style: the Genius MaxFire Pandora. The layout is a directional pad, six buttons on the face and two shoulder buttons. Also on the face are a “Turbo” and “Clear” button. The controller is pretty small and it opens in a clamshell design allowing you to wind the USB cable inside the controller. This works well as my travel controller and is good for those Sega games that make use of six buttons.

My only complaint is that the directional pad can take some getting used to. Often it’s easier to hit a diagonal than directly up, down, left or right.

    Peace,

    manaman
