Sega’s Best Genesis Moving To PSP and PS2

It looks like Sega finally got a clue. They realized they need to capitalize on their most valuable IP and will be bringing a generous collection of their 16-bit Genesis titles to both the PS2 and PSP.

Perhaps this was inspired by the excitement over their announcement to have Genesis games availible on the Wii’s Virtual Console, but I know many old-school Sega fans are already drooling.

1Up.com broke the news and writes…
There are the games that birthed franchises that live on today — Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi, Phantasy Star, and Golden Axe (which will see a sequel on PS3 and 360) — but also the greats that have for one reason or another long been forgotten — Vectorman, Sword of Vermillion, Comix Zone, or Alex Kidd. There’s also a lot of great history to many games found in the collection. One of the titles, Ristar, was once planned to be the next Sonic the Hedgehog-style success story for Sega (in fact, the idea for the character Ristar actually predated Sonic – he evolved from the character designs of what Sonic was originally to be: a rabbit)… Sega’s doing its part to give these games context with numerous unlockable interviews with the original developers and a museum with trivia on the disc.”

If you would like a complete rundown on all 30 games that will be included in addition to more information on each and the games themselves, check out the post at 1UP.com

I personally found it interesting that Shining Force, Streets of Rage, the later Sonic the Hedgehog games, and the Treasure games such as Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy were not included, but we could also rattle off interesting games that were left off (see The Best Sega Genesis Games for A Nintendo Revolution). Anyway, I applaud Sega for putting this together — it’s just disappointing that they are only for consoles/handhelds I don’t own. Guess I’ll just have to wait for the Wii.

The guys in the forums actually started talking about these compilations before I even posted this. Join in on the conversation!
