Sega Still Commited To Reviving Old Franchises
It has been a long and drawn-out process, but Sega is still showing signs of bringing some of its old but loved series back to life.
This initiative was first announced nearly two years ago. From my archived blog post…
“It’s been announced that Sega plans to license some of it’s classic franchises out to get more sequels out on the market…
The list of IP that has been designated for western third-party development reads as follows:
House of the Dead
NiGHTS
Golden Axe
Virtua Cop
Streets of Rage
Shinobi
Crazy Taxi
Altered Beast”
We have already heard of an Golden Axe resurrection on its way for the PS3 and XBox 360 in addition to a strong rumor of NiGHTs Into Dreams Coming to the Nintendo Wii.
Sega also announced a partnership with Totally Games on an upcoming Sega franchise that has not been officially announced, but it believed to be Alien Syndrome.
And today Sega announced a new partnership with Planet Moon Studios (Armed & Dangerous, Infected) to create a new game for the PSP based on an undisclosed existing Sega franchise. The franchise everyone is talking about is Streets of Rage. Could this be why Streets of Rage was not included in the upcoming PSP and PS2 Genesis Compilation?
From Gamasutra…
“Sega’s vast library of properties allows for unlimited possibilities in revitalizing fan-favorites on the PSP,” said Bob Stevenson, Co-Founder and CEO of Planet Moon Studios. “Our passion for Sega’s classic brands combined with our extensive background in crafting original games will help us create a compelling new chapter in this fan-favorite franchise.”
“With an incredible archive of established franchises, Sega is always seeking strategic partnerships with top development talent to revitalize our vintage titles,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, Sega of America, Inc. “Planet Moon’s reputation of creating critically acclaimed games makes them the perfect choice to inject originality and ingenuity to our classic IPs.”
Hopefully, we will here more on this matter shortly. Before long, maybe my franchise wishlist will be fulfilled…

Great article! This is what I want. Oh yes.
On the Planet Moon speculation: Sega recently ordered the company to staff up employees with “action/flight” game experience…sounds to me like a new Space Harrier, Panzer Dragoon or NiGHTS from Planet Moon. I’ve seen some strong rumors lately that have NiGHTS 2 being developed in-house and pegged with a 2008 release, so the first two franchises seem more likely for them. I would rather have the other titles developed in-house at Sega too, but this should still be a great endeavor. Sega’s got some serious work to do with returning to their lost franchises; I’ll take Jet Grind and Shenmue as well, please. And Megamix. And Wild Riders. And…
Hmm, interesting…
Might I ask where that picture is from?
BTW, no news here on Shenmue Online, or did I miss something?
Just in case, here is a 500mb HighDef-clip: http://www.clubskill.com/downloads/Shenmue%20Online/cj2006_shenmu_hi.mpg
And here is some youtube-stuff regarding Shenmue Online: http://www.demonews.de/kurznachrichten/index.php?shortnews=9142
I think Planet Moon’s track record of games would be far more suited to Alien Syndrome than Streets of rage, but time will tell.
