What To Expect From Street Fighter 2 on XBLA

The most talked-about XBox Live Arcade game of 2006 has been progressing after numerous delays, but it sounds like Capcom is working hard to bring the grand-daddy of 2D fighters online in its full glory.

Even though it was slated for a June 10th release date, I still haven’t heard any release dates since and it isn’t on the official XBLA site.

As XBox 360 owners anticipate this online brawling experience, we have been treated to some additional tibits to keep us drooling. First of all, Kotaku was kind enough to share the demo video of Street Fighter 2 running on XBLA.

Capcom has also shared the Achievements that will be availible for Street Fighter 2, suggesting that the recent batch of delays (mostly due to optimising network code and an uncertain price point) are finally coming to an end. There are a total of 12 achievements on offer, totalling a generous 200 Gamerpoints. (Start practicing)

  • (5) 12 World Warriors - Fight with all 12 characters in single-player arcade mode.
  • (5) Perfection - Complete a perfect match at default difficulty or higher in single-player arcade mode.
  • (10) Bonus Bonanza - Complete a perfect bonus round in single-player arcade mode.
  • (15) World Champion - Compete single-player arcade mode.
  • (20) 7 Stars - Complete single-player arcade mode at the highest difficulty level.
  • (25) Hyper World Champion - Complete single-player arcade mode without losing a match.
  • (30) Perfect World Champion - Complete single-player arcade mode without losing a round.
  • (5) I Got Next - Play a match in the online quarter mode.
  • (10) 10 tokens - Play ten ranked online matches.
  • (20) 50 Tokens - Play fifty ranked online matches.
  • (20) 10 Ranked Online Victories - Achieve ten wins during ranked online play.
  • (35) 30 Ranked Online Victories - Achieve thirty wins during ranked online play.

Finally, Hexus Gaming has written up a hands-on review to give us a slightly better idea of what to expect from how the XBLA version handles and what the online aspect will be like…

“The pad rumbles when you take or administer a punch and each of the buttons, including the triggers need to be used to pull off those fancy moves. The controls are responsive and the action is as frantic as ever. “

“You’re initially presented with the option of either viewing your stats, entering a ranked match, or jumping into a non-ranked player match. You can dive straight into a game, search for a custom game, or create your own match and wait for a challenger. Creating a custom match allows you to pre-set how many rounds you wish to play. If you’ve chosen a unranked game your stats won’t be updated at the end of the match, you will have the option however to replay the match and discuss the fight in the lobby system. “

I’m glad to hear Capcom isn’t simply developing a quick port to make some easy money. Instead they are maximizing one of their best franchises to re-ignite interests for both the hardcore fighting fans and for those who have all but forgotten about the franchise.
