Super Paper Mario – Gamecube 2D Bliss!

I have been preaching about how a 2D platformer on a modern console would be pure heaven (see Sega, I Dare You) and it looks like Nintendo maybe grant my wish.

Super Paper Mario will take all the atmosphere and style from the RPGish Paper Mario games that we adored and bring it back into a 2D platformer.

You can see for yourself how incredibly beautiful and fun this upcoming Gamecube game (yes, Nintendo’s still cranking some out) looks via these screenshots and this video footage.

As interesting as the New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS looked, I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed with the polygon look. However, I think that the Paper Mario style has the perfect blend of old-school style and modern polish that will be enough to make nostolgic gamers, both hardcore and casual, drool with anticipation.

We are still looking forward to more information, but the video alone speaks volumes.

  1. You speak as if Nintendo didn’t already make a Paper Mario for the Gamecube. They did.

  2. Well, that’s why I said the RPGish Paper Mario games

    This one’s a platformer.

    Sorry for any confusion

  3. Going into E3 I figured Nintendo might suprise us with an interesting GameCube game or two.

My predictions were a port of Mario Kart arcade, or a second Luigi’s Mansion.

But man, Super paper Mario blows them both out of the water. Why this wasn’t featured (however briefly) at the press conference I’ll never understand.

Anyway, this is the best time to be a Mario fan since the 1991-1994 window, when we had Mario 3, Mario World, Mario Kart, and Mario All-stars all right on top of each other.

  4. Oh this is strictly platforming? I didn’t both reading into it because I have missed out on the other two paper marios.
