CD-ROM Formats Supported On Virtual Console
With all the excitement going on about the Nintendo Revolution’s Virtual Console announcements, there was some smaller, but very interesting information released by Hudson regarding their support of the Virtual Console. (Download Press Release PDF)
While we know that many TurboGrafx games will be availible for downloads, both the card and CD-ROM formats will be supported. The TurboGrafx/PCEngine underwent numerous revisions, going from a solid-state storage format to a few different CD-ROM formats.
The announcement confirmed that the Nintendo Revolution’s emulation will cover games stored on ROM cards and at least one of the CD formats, known as CD-ROM2. Whether the Super CD and Arcade CD formats will be supported is currently not clear.
Aside from expanding the selection of TurboGrafx games that will be available for play on Revolution, this news also gives hope that classic Super CD games such as Dracula X may be among the playable titles. Some of these PC-Engine games are rare collector’s items, fetching high prices even in Japan.
On a broader scale, this may also show a great deal of hope that other CD formats such as the Sega CD or maybe even the Neo-Geo CD will be supported as well. The Sega CD should not be much harder to emulate than the Genesis as long as the CD format is supported. It would be especially nice if gamers could play their original Sega CD discs (or even their backups) on the Revolution.
In fact, the gameplay experience would probably be even better as load times would be much faster on the newer hardware than on the original console.
Maybe we will find out more at E3. I’ll keep you posted.

This is good news for Homebrew and Dev.
This machine is really getting me excited, especially to see what people on the web come up with.
^_^
I wouldn’t hold my breath. Nintendo has a very aggressive stance on IP. It’s unlikely the Revolution will be running anything unsigned.
I keep hearing this argument, but I know that for every security measure, there’s a work-around.
Look at the Sega Saturn and say no more.
Look at the first generation X-Box, and say no more.
It will happen, if somebody wants it to bad enough.
This HUGE news, as far as I’m concerned. Even if Rev starts with just CD-ROM2 capabilities, I’m still a happy camper.
But ideally, by X-Mas 2007 I’d love to see:
Genesis
Sega CD
Turbo, Turbo CD, Super CD, and Arcade CD
Sega Saturn
All on the virtual console. Neo-Geo would be frosting on an already delicious cake.
