XBox Live Arcade Adds Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 And Others

It looks like the XBox Live Arcade may be on its way to seriously compete with the Revolution’s upcoming virtual console system and its NES, SNES, and N64 downloads.

Midway will be bringing five more great classics to XBox 360 (release date and price not yet announced):

Defender
This really-old-school scrolling shooter may be due for a slight graphical upgrade. I’m wondering if even the most die-hard gamers might be turned off by the limited graphics of the original. But, of course the gameplay is there and Defender is listed as one of the “Top 100 Videogames” of all time by the Killer List of Videogames

Paperboy
This newspaper delivery simulator is one of my favorite Midway games (even though I suck at it) and I can see this as a perfect fit in the XBox Live Arcade. It’s one of those few games that hasn’t really been duplicated, so it’s still a very relevant game in today’s game market.

Root Beer Tapper
This neat little game still has quite a cult following in the arcade community due to its bar-room charm and twitch gameplay.

Cyberball
If you prefer pixelated robots over polygon NFL pros in your football games, you might just be in the market for Cyberball. It should be cool to see some XBox Live tournements with this game :)
 Ultimate Mortal Kombat III
Hot on the heels of Street Fighter 2, the (arguably) best version of Mortal Kombat. I see this one being one the top sellers as the franchise still seems to have quite a following and this version offers a great deal of features.

Midway already has four existing games on the XBox Live arcade with Joust, Gauntlet, Smash TV, and Robotron: 2084.

The Midway representatives also stated that the sales of their existing downloads have greatly exceeded their expectation. They aren’t getting rich off of them, but it is making some nice income for the publisher.

And, if you are interested in more thoughts on this returning trend of arcade games, take a look at this article that was just on Digg’s main page, Golden Age of Arcade Games: A New Hope.

Defender: For hardcore oldschoolers, this is the most interesting of the new set. It is an extremely demanding, but masterable, game. It helps that it was the game to introduce the cool Williams sound system to the world.

Paperboy: This won’t be the version to finally give us an arcade-quality Paperboy experience because that depends on having a handlebar controller.

Root Beer Tapper: Fun for a short while, but overrated.

Cyberball: An interesting game, but it hasn’t aged well in a world where sports games get yearly incremental releases.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3: Finally, a Midway X-box Live Arcade game that hasn’t seen previous life in a Midway Arcade Treasures release! Although its being left out of MAT2 (while the original MK3 was included) can be fairly regarded as publisher stinginess. I am not an expert in fighting games, but I don’t think the MKs stand the test of time. Might be fun for the nostalgia, but not otherwise.
