PS3 & PS2: Online Backwards Compatibility Potential

I was just noticing the other day that Sony was looking like it was going to be left out of the online game distribution market leading to a lack of competition with the XBox Live Arcade and the Nintendo Revolution Virtual Console.

Just a few days later, GameIndustry.biz is reporting that Sony is considering a digital distribution service which would bring PS1 and PS2 games to the PS3 or even a special version of the more affordable PS2.

An unnamed source claims that Sony is attempting to figure out the technical requirement needed to provide the service. Obviously many of the Playstation or Playstation 2 games are going to be much larger than even the N64 games availible on the Revolution. While bandwidth might not be much of an issue, storage on the machine may be an issue as some games can be as large as 600MB to multiple GBs (for multi-disc PS1 RPGs or DVD PS2 games).

Sony also doesn’t have quite the back library of Nintendo, nor does it have the rights to as many games and instead will have to work out licensing with the developers.

Sony does have some great games though — especially if you are looking for newer RPGs and some excellent shooters. And even though I’m not much of a Sony fan, the more options on backwards compatibility, the better!

Well, if you think about it, these multile disc games usually are that way beacuase the FMVs in them. Technology has advanced quite a bit, and I’m sure you can get even crispier quality FMV using less data nowdays with the newer codecs out there. Re- tooling this willbe the most time consuming, I belive.
