Not All Rareware Titles for Revolution

With all of the excitement surrounding the announcement of the Genesis and TG16 being supported for the Revolution, there is some somewhat disappointing news about the availibilty of certain game downloads.

Matt Casamassina from IGN recently caught up with some people from Rareware at GDC, and they confirmed that no Rareware SNES/N64 games (apart from ones that Nintendo owns rights to) will appear on the Virtual Console service for the Nintendo Revolution, including games such as Conker, Banjo Kazooie, Goldeneye 007, Jet Force Gemini, and Perfect Dark. Its a sham since many of these games were on the list of N64 games to Push The Limits of the system

Games that Rareware developed and Nintendo owns the rights to, such as Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong 64, and Diddy Kong Racing should be good to go.

In order for Goldeneye 007 to appear on the service, both Electronic Arts (who now own the 007 game rights) and Rareware would have to commit to it. That doesn’t seem likely…It’s a shame really, they could potentially add online multiplayer to it and everything.

  1. I don’t forsee Nintendo adding any major gameplay enhancements to these classic roms. Maybe in rare instances, and those games will cost a premium.

I’d care about Rare if any of those old games were fun today. But Goldeneye for example, just isn’t. It loved it when it launched, but today it’s a terrible game in terms of control and frame rate. I don’t know how I used to play it. And I never liked Perfect Dark or Conker for that matter.

  2. Well, we can’t expect every game to be on the virtual console thing, because of legal troubles, such as the various games under Shonen Jump licensing in Japan. But at least most games will be available.

  3. I agree that most Rare games don’t age very well, except perhaps if you’ve never played them.

However, I do think it’s terrible that Perfect Dark’s amazing multiplayer content will not be available for Revolution.
