Preview: Exit for Sony PSP

I kinda have a thing for games that obviously takes cues from older games, but do so in a stylish way. Exit for the PSP is one such game. It borrows heavily from the environment of the Elevator Action series and action from the older Prince of Persias, but brings a different type of objective to the game.

You play as Mr. Esc who scours buildings in search of stick figure survivors, rescuing them from life-threatening situations like fires, earthquakes and other disasters. By clearing paths, pushing switches and leaping over gaps you can make a route to save these hapless souls.

Exit begins with only 10 levels initially playable, but once the tutorial stages are completed another 60 become available for play in any order (with the remaining 30 unlockable as progress is made in the prior sections). The initial stages are simple enough, but jumping ahead it’s clear that this is a temporary situation — the later stages are challenging indeed. Each of the areas has a different theme and threat, which gives Exit much more variety than most games.

So far, Exit looks absolutely gorgeous. It features 2.5D visuals rendered in a striking, nearly hand-drawn style. It’s blend of colorful backgrounds and solid black characters remind me of a cross of Feel The Magic from the DS and Comix Zone on the Genesis. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of this game.
