No Melty Blood for Dreamcast - PS2 Only

While the steady stream of NAOMI shmup ports (see Radilgy and Under Defeat for the latest) is greatly appreciated I and many others would like to see some fighting action on the Dreamcast. Melty Blood: Act Cadenza is a slick fighter for the NAOMI arcade system (which was a port of an indie PC game) that had some real promise as a late Dreamcast port.

But it looks like a Dreamcast port of Melty Blood was not meant to be. A PS2 port was recently announced, but that’s it. While I suppose its better than nothing, I can’t help but feel disappointed.

Melty Blood is possibly the best indie fighting game from the doujin PC world. It has an incredibly solid fighting engine in addition to some very nice visuals. It has been compared to the likes of Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike and Guilty Gear X.

Recovers, chains and air dashes are all abundant in Melty Blood. However the games is known for being unforgiving — especially when try to time special moves or combos correctly. However, nobody can overlook how polished the game is in terms of both presentation and gameplay. While it can be challenging, it is one of those fighters the can be incredibly rewarding if you devote some time to learning its system.

They make money producing Dreamcast games still. The key factor is predicting the ammount of copies to manufacture. The damn things sell for 50-60 bucks at launch everytime, so that’s a hefty chunk of money for every copy of a game that required a minimal ammount of effort on the developer’s side. There are MANY hardcore Dreamcast owners out there that buy these when they are released.
