Meta-Review: Samurai Shodown Tenka - PS2 (Japan)
The first amurai Spirits (Samurai Shodown in the US) game from the new Atomiswave hardware. Tenkaichi Kenkyakuden (usually refered to as “Tenka” in the US) is filled to the brim with character selections, gameplay options, and beautiful graphic work. It looks to be the Dream Game for Samurai Shodown fans.
So far both the game itself and the heavily anticipated Japanese PS2 release has been treated to a number of positive comments and reviews.
Review Tidbits:
“The Capcom vs. SNK resemblance starts to show in Tenkaichi’s selection of different play modes. There are six to pick from, the same as the number of Grooves in Capcom’s game, but instead of letters, they’re identified with a particular Japanese character. Some of the styles hearken back to a particular one of the previous games. Zan, for instance, seems to have a bit in common with Samurai Shodown IV, subtitled “Zankuro Musouken” in Japan.”

“Frames of animation per character is smooth for the most part - Samurai Spirits stalwarts such as Haohmaru, Galford, and Nakoruru animate well but it’s the massive fighters in the game that are impressive - for example, Earthquake, the bruiser with the red vest, red pants, orange face paint, and swinging chain and sickle animates just as smoothly as the svelte Nak or Charlotte. If Earthquake just stands there, you can listen to the grinding of his chain as it swings around in perpetual motion. Controlling Earthquake also feels more weighty than when controlling a lightweight such as Cham-Cham and Earth moves with measured pace and substantial inertia…
The action runs fast and responsive with move combinations pulled off with tugs of the joypad or joystick and appropriate button presses. The background animations and panoramas are pretty much intact from the Atomiswave original. We must also commend SNK on the vibrant audio of the game. We ran the game through an 5.1 surround sound setup and there’s a song in the game which features background drums and faint jingles - listen to the little nuances in the music as it plays and the throaty beats.”

“Graphics is just like the arcade version. I’ve play the game a few times in arcade and the PS2 version definately looks the same. Some people will be disappointed to know though that there is no “filter” option available. Anyway, still looks good…
Loading is short. Only 3-4 seconds. Maybe 5 secs max but definately really short. All those that were annoyed by the loading times of NGBC can now throw their worries away…
Gameplay overall I think feels faster when compared to other SS games. It has been ages since I last played any SS games except SSV with I have. This game is definataly faster than SSV and more combo friendly. Maybe its me but the PS2 version feels slighly (very slight) faster than the arcade version. With the addition of grooves this game definately feel complete.”
