Worms: Open Warfare for DS and PSP
Those cute little worms are back in full force for some classic 2D brawls on your Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.
Multiplayer always was the most fun you can have with Worms, and the new versions won’t disappoint. PSP owners can enjoy hotseat matches if there’s only one copy of the game available, or if each player has a copy you can take part in wireless four player battles. The DS version will also feature a hotseat mode and game sharing for up to four players. So far there’s no word on whether you’ll be able to play online via Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection service, but here’s hoping.
In terms of presentation, Worms: Open Warfare seems to follow the classic Worms formula while making great use of the DS’s 2nd screen for item selection, maps and more. The PSP version looks gorgeous with its high-resolution widescreen.
The good news is that they’ve done away with all that 3D nonsense for the most part. While foregrounds will be in 2D, backgrounds are 3D, so it’s in “2.5D”, according to Team 17. That’s the way I like it.
Landscape themes will include space, woodlands, ancient Egypt and volcanic caverns, and although the gameplay has been finely tuned to suit handheld controls it’ll be familiar to fans of the series. As will most of the weapons, which will include grenades, rocket launchers, teleporters and the ever-popular sheep gun.
Worms Open Warfare is out on DS and PSP on March 24.

To be honest, I liked the 3D Worms. I played through one of the GCN titles (about 2 years ago; don’t rememeber which one) and really enjoyed it. Then I went back to find the old 2D titles I’d never played and found them somewhat unexciting in comparison.
I guess maybe it depends on what you start out on.
My wife (then girlfriend) use to play Worms Armegeddon on my laptop in college all the time.
The 2D environment just seems less complex to me and therefore maximizing the gameplay.
