1980s Genesis
Many of us were introduced to the Sega Genesis via 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog. But the history of the console goes back years prior, as the Genesis launched in North America in 1989 and (it's hard to believe) 1988 in Japan. This category is for all those wild early Genesis (and Mega Drive) titles: arcade ports, shmups, golf, Rambo, Hydlide, and so much more.

Enix on SNES
Enix was always more of a publisher than developer. They achieved greatness on the Super Nintendo (and Super Famicom), releasing games by the likes of Heartbeat, Quintet, Chunsoft, Almanic, Quest, Produce, Westone, tri-Ace, and, uh, Manley & Associates. There's a lot to explore in this RPG-heavy category.
Games List:
The 7th Saga

ActRaiser 2
Brain Lord
Dark Half
Dragon Quest I & II

HuCard RPGs
Discussions around the best TurboGrafx RPGs almost always center around the CD-ROM games, like the immortal Ys Book I & II. But what about those humble HuCard (or "TurboChip") releases? There are surely some gems lurking about here. Passwords or saves, it's your choice. Rest in Peace, Virtual Console.
Games List:
Benkei Gaiden

I am in for Sega before Sonic and Protagonist: Penguin, but I’m really rooting for the latter!

It's a Zelda clone, thus it's not an RPG.

I voted for 80s Genesis and visual novels.

I got a bunch of Japanese Mega Drive games in Japan last year and would like to take a stab at playing through Curse or Truxton (Tatsujin).
I've also long owned EVE Burst Error for Saturn *and* the translated release for PC, so that would be a good visual novel for the month.

I'm still deciding what to vote for, but as usual the option I most want to win is in last place

This is what I have available for each option:

80s Mega Drive: Apparently only 4 games released in the 80s for PAL Mega Drive, and most of them are bad. Luckily though, the other one is Herzog Zwei, which I own and need to beat, so that's what I'd do for this category

Enix on SNES: I have Ogre Battle on Virtual Console, and a physical cartridge for Wonder Project J, both of which I'd happily play. This is the category I'd want to win.

Hucard RPGs: I have Neutopia 1 and 2 on VC aswell. I don't think they're RPGs personally, but Bone listed them so ok.

Classic Adventure games: I don't have anything available to play right now for this category. I'd either have to emulate, which I'm less keen on, or play a more modern option that is at least in the spirit of the category - something like 428 Shibuya Scramble or LovePlus.

Penguin protags: I have Penguin Land on SMS and Prinny 2 on PSN to play, so this one is covered.

Not sure what to vote yet. I'm leaning towards Enix and Penguins, but need longer to consider.
