Retro game music appreciation page
Re: Retro game music appreciation page
So what are your qualifications or standards for these tracks? Simply “I liked it,” or are you looking at compositional structures and approaches or technological achievements with the hardware?

Commendable work, it seems like a big gamble to link so many youtube links though. My playlists get destroyed months over months with even the most obscure videos/tracks being taken down after awhile.
Too bad VGM topics are never too popular here. JT and I have made many in the past but they never last long.

Last year I showed my students this documentary, which seems right up this alley. Have you seen it? It is pretty technical, but fascinating:

Oh Wow. I just noticed this topic. That's incredible!
I notice a lack of PC Speaker. I'd like to nominate Star Goose.
Edit! Oh you got Digger there; Nice! Love for the Windmill Softwares.

I've always had a fondness for the opening theme song from the Silver Surfer NES game. It had the catchy, sort of epic rock-dance beat as the notes progressed down the scale and then back up again. I haven't heard it in years, but I can still hear it in my head. Such a unique game too - basically a space shooter skinned as a Silver Surfer game.

That was Tim Follin, wasn't it? He's the great Euro Arp-Master.

With the PS1 and Saturn you have to be really careful, because a lot of them also used streaming soundtracks that aren't redbook audio but also aren't generated by the internal audio chips. Those mostly sound like redbook but are slightly lower quality. Stuff like SotN is streaming, whereas Tactics Ogre is chip.

That's cool. Have you found a way to assess the quality of the streaming playback or do you just go by your ears?

Yeah, I was talking about the streaming audio. I'm not familiar with the bit rates and whatnot and how most streaming audio in the PS1 or Saturn compares quality-wise to redbook.
