I realize this is a tough subject as, for years, there are arguments that a proper game would...
Be difficult to see a proper return on investment
A portion of a SourceGaming interview with former Nintendo dev, Giles Godfrey...
SG: Are there any series from Nintendo that you would like to work on? How about a Star Fox?
GG: No. F-Zero would be an interesting one. I don’t think they would ever….because the expectations for these old-school games are so high now. The last F-Zero game was…F-Zero GX…and that was really expensive. It has to be bigger and better than F-Zero GX, and that would be a huge risk for them. Having said that…I really like the original F-Zero. I never got into GX as it felt more and more like Wipeout. The faster and more wide angle it got, the more Wipeout it felt. To me, F-Zero is all about those tight courses with the tight bends, and the skidding around and drifting. I’d love to go back and visit that kind of control scheme but make it a smaller experience. I don’t think they would as their current philosophy is just bigger and better.
Need a proper controller (per Miyamoto)
We see a lot of other designers who are kind of making more traditional racing-style games, so we try to focus on something that feels a little bit more gamey. So maybe if we create a new type of controller interface and we find that controller interface is particularly suited for F-Zero, then maybe we’ll do something again with it in the future.
However
A full HD, 60fps version of F-Zero would be amazing

If new installment is too expensive, what about a remake of GX?
Maybe create some new levels? Create some limited edition sets (maybe even deluxe sets with special controllers) to help monetize the investment.
A darker F-Zero could be a could alternative to the bright and cheerful Mario Kart franchise
Perhaps pull some inspiration for either a new series installment or additional levels from the likes of Blade Runner or TRON Legacy
There hasn't been a 3D portable F-Zero yet
I'm not really looking for a 3Ds version -- the Switch is the perfect opportunity to make both portable and console fans happy.
There have been less non-simulator racers lately leaving less competition
Yes, perhaps the market for non-sims is smaller now, but less competition leaves this as a new opportunity for Nintendo to bring back the franchise with strength.
Here's a nice editorial from a while back on this subject, but obviously the Switch and more time passing since GX makes the case stronger.
