With
the recent rumor that a Radiant Silvergun/Ikaruga followup is in the works, I can't help but think of the possibilities of what Treasure could do with their shooter collection.
First of all, supposedly Treasure is looking at the XBox 360. The existing shooters like Geometry Wars have done very well on XBox Live Arcade and probably do better than a limited release on store shelves.
Treasure games don't seem to perform well in retail because the print run is fairly limited and they word doesn't spread about them until they are pretty much out of print. With an online distribution model like the XBLA or the Wii's Virtual Console, that element is erased and it increases the likelyhood that the game will be a viral success.
Continuing on this thought, I could really see a port of both Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga on either the XBLA or Virtual Console. Radiant Silvergun might be the biggest challenge since its originally ran on more complex hardware. Ikaruga was ported to the Gamecube which would make it an easy port to the Wii (not so much to the 360).
However, both games are very small in terms of data size. I'll have to doublecheck to make sure, but a compressed copy of the Saturn version of Radiant Silvergun is about 32MB and a compressed copy of the Dreamcast version of Ikaruga is about 19MBs. These small sizes would make them optimal for a download-and-play environment.
I'd love to hear what you think about this trilogy idea or just the Project RS3 Rumor as a whole.
