Good question. It isn't being used in the proper sense.

It's very hard for me to do this especially with games that fall in the range of 32-bit to Xbox range. For instance fatal frame 2 still plays nicely, but I popped in the original fatal frame and was like ugh, this has not aged well. I really don't want to play the first one.

I felt weird typing it, but that's what OP had referred to them as. I thought I had put in quotes, but I guess not...

Why ? whats wrong with prequel ?

A prequel is a work that was made after the original, but in canon takes place before the original work.

Star Wars episodes 1-3 are prequels to Star Wars Episode 4. Star Wars Episode 4 is NOT a prequel to The Empire Strikes back, because it was made before that film.

You could use predecessor.

Yeah predecessor would have been the proper term, as in: "Is there a point in playing an inferior predecessor in a series?"

I always thought that prequel and sequel are relative to the worked described.

So Die Hard 2 is prequel to 3 and 4 is sequel to 3 , as long as the time-line moves forward in the story line

my mistake , predecessor seems right
