As mentioned, the classic C&C games are fantastic, and of course there's Starcraft. Diablo is great as well. I think the big reason FPSs are coming up is that the era that your PC is from was a big era for the FPS (before the Xbox started ruining things for us).

Revenge at Krondor and Return to Krondor are, for some reason, the only RPGs I have ever enjoyed on the PC, unless we also count the original Deus Ex.

Psychonauts is also really great for the PC, and I highly recommend it (although, make sure you get a controller first).

While I have and fully enjoy Bioshock and Unreal Tournament III for the PS3 (still waiting for a decent computer that can handle them), I'm sure the PC versions are a much better experience. The original Unreal Tournament is also definitely worth getting, and is just classic. And of course, anything with Valve in it is a must-buy in this household.

I also have a large love affair with RTS, and I highly recommend the original Seven Kingdoms, as well as the Age of Empires series, Warcraft series, Starcraft, the original Empire Earth, Command and Conquer, and I'm sure others I can't remember right now.

And hey, let's not forget the true classics. The Monkey Island series, the Sam & Max series, The Gabriel Knight series, Day of the Tentacle, the King's Quest series, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, and I'm sure an incredible amount of other Graphic Adventures I can't quite think of right now.

Brix
Jill of the Jungle
Duke Nukem, the 2D originals
Zone 66
Castle Wolfenstein
Beyond Castle Wolfenstein
Raptor: Call of the Shadows
Kiloblaster
Descent: FreeSpace
Postal
Hitman
Hitman 2

Couple of quick questions, like what are your thoughts on point-and-click adventure games? FMV games? Are they cool or not your style?

Oh, and since most of what I've played were FPSs, that's mostly what I can provide:

Alien Trilogy
Alien versus Predator
Alien versus Predator Gold
Alien versus Predator 2
Battlefield 1942
Catacomb 3D
Chex Quest
Chex Quest 2
Clive Barker's Undying
Counter-Strike
Dark Forces
Descent
Descent 2
Descent 3
Deus Ex (hey, I see it as a first person shooter)
Doom
Doom 2
Duke Nukem 3D
Final Doom
Half-Life
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Heretic
Hexen
Hexen 2
Ken's Labyrinth
Kingpin: Life of Crime
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Mortyr
No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In H.A.R.M.S. Way
Pathways Into Darkness
Quake
Quake 2
Quake III Arena
Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear
Red Faction
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Rise of the Triad
Serious Sam
Shadow Warrior
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Soldier of Fortune
Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix
Spear of Destiny
Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Starsiege: Tribes
System Shock
System Shock 2
Team Fortress Classic
The Operative: No One Lives Forever
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
Tribes 2
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Turok: Rage Wars
Turok 2
Unreal
Unreal Tournament
Wolfenstein 3D

And sine you listed 2003 as the cutoff, I'm hesitant to list things like Postal 2, Savage, and Call of Duty, since they were released in that year.

Does this help?

The problem with System Shock 2 is that it doesnt like alot of graphics cards. But if you havent updated your system then you should be ok.

To add to the other lists off the top of my head:

Real Time Strategy:
- Command and Conquer First Decade – It is all of the C&C games up to Generals (so 10). All excellent and it is only $20 or so at most stores.
- The 'Craft Series - namely Starcraft Battlechest and Warcraft 2 battlechest. Your machine should be able to handle Warcraft 3, but I am hesitant to suggest it without knowing more about your pc - I play it on a netbook though...
- Emperor Rise of the Middle Kingdom – Think of it like Simcity but with military elements
- Emperor Battle for Dune – Dune based 3d RTS
- Dune 2000 – Dune 2 remade on the C&C engine
- Warlords Battlecry 2&3 – Beautiful fantasy RTS’s with a very good persistent hero system.
- Age of Empires 1&2
- Age of Mythology – may be too taxing for your system
- Rise of Nations
- Total Annihilation with expansions and fan content – The RTS. Use to play it on a p1, still play it on my quadcore, some games on usermade maps even tax that…Close to 1 to 1 map of the US with 50,000 units per side and seven AIs.
- Lemmings

Turnbased Strategy:
- Civilization 2/Free Civ
- Civilization 3
- Fantasy General – plays like an Avalon Hill or MMP game
- Disciples 2 – Kinda like a turnbased Ogre Battle on the pc – fair warning the games are long

Simulators:
- Descent 1-3
- Magic Carpet – ok it is more of a fps…
- Xplane 7 – itll take a while to load, but it is a gorgeous bit of programming.
- Freelancer
- Xwing vs Tiefighter
- Xwing Alliance
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 – I prefer Xplane but many like this one.
- GT Legends – 60s/70s car racing
- GTR 1 - You wont be able to run 2
- Carmegeddon series
- Midtown Madness
- Midnight Club 2
- Drift City – it may be pushing it, requires a ati 9600/geforce 6 series – but it has a lot of fans.
- Live to Speed – The most ambitious of all race simulators

Action & Adventure (well loosely):
- American McGee’s Alice – A must play.
- Grand Theft Auto 2 – free download
- Myst and sequels
- Jazz Jackrabbit series – Sonic meets Megaman
- Jill of the Jungle series
- Broken Sword series
- Ripper
- Phantasmagoria
- Puzzle of Flesh (Phantasmagoria 2)
- Space Quest series
- Kings Quest series
- Police Quest series
- Hugo series – the adventure games, not the platformers
- Crystal Caves – if you get hooked on this itll last you the rest of your life…
- Discworld 1&2
- Gabriel Knight series
- The Humans – technically a puzzle game…
- Leisure Suit Larry series
- Quest for Glory series

You should have some prime specs for older MMOs. They can be intensive, but Ultima Online, Planetside (mmofps), and Phantasy Star Online, are all titles that are atleast worth a look. And if you are really hardcore, there are millions of Infocom text adventures…

You know I hate RTSs, but that I've got to see. I need to find another copy of TA...
