141. Famicom Detective Club Part II: The Girl in Back

Image

I realize this might not strictly count as its virtually impossible to get outside of emulation or via the Super Powerpak/Everdrive, but I really do think this is one of the best games on the SNES and it would be a shame if it didn't get a mention.

Famicom Detective Club Part 2 is a 1998 release on the Nintendo Power Data Cartridge service just like Super Famicom Wars. It is an complete and rather extensive remake of Famicom Detective Club, originally released in four volumes on the Famicom Disk System in 1989.

Although the title says it's Part 2, this is actually the prequel to the first and so far untranslated game, so there is no problem starting fresh from here.

Image

The game is a murder-mystery Japanese graphical text adventure. The story revolves around the mysterious death of Yuko Kojima, a 15 year old highschool girl attending Ushimitsu High. According to Yoko’s best friend and classmate Ayumi Tachibana, the two had formed a “detective club” and were investigating mysteries across town. Prior to her death, Yoko had been investigating an eerie ghost story turned urban legend in her highschool called “The tale of the girl in back.”

A few years ago, the game was expertly translated by Tomato, the same key force translation hacking wizard that brought us Mother 3 in English. The English rom-hack translation is exceptionally well written and engaging. If you’ve played any of the Phoenix Wright or countless other Adventure games you’ll know exactly what to expect.

Famicom Detective Club Part 2 is an amazing experience and is much darker than you would expect a Nintendo game to be. It’s a shame that the series never really continued, but if you are looking for an engaging adventure game to sink your teeth into, look no further. There are some noticeable flaws regarding the trial and error gameplay of some situations, but this is indicative of the genre itself. If you can stomach this kind of game, I highly recommend it.

Yeah I hope you guys will play it through Famicom Detective Club Part 2. In fact, I'd like to get a reproduction made someday. I looked into it a year or two ago and was told that I'd need an Equinox cart as a donor. So I went out and got me a cart and it's sitting here, unused. Maybe someday someone can make a repro of it. Till then, the Super Powerpak does a wonderful job.

One of the critical flaws of the game is often you need to exhausted every option but quit to proceed, and then double check them just to make sure you didn't miss something. The pacing is absolutely one of an 80s text adventure. If (or rather when) you get stuck, just keep trying all the options. Eventually you'll figure out what to do to move on.

I'm glad you brought up the music CFFJR. Just like Phoenix Wright, I think the music in this game is 50% of the overall experience. Although its far better looking than the FDS original, it isn't a particularly graphically exciting game, so you notice the music more than I think you would otherwise. The entire score made very good use of the Famicom Disk System hardware, and the Super Famicom remake really makes it shine.

The haunting "Girl in back" theme used whenever talking about the late Yoko sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it.

Not to shabby for a 16 bit game.
