A great workaround! I should have caught this when my Half Life PS2 CD wouldn't even install with HDAdvance directly. It would only install using the PC ISO method.

This does not allow a normal HDLoader install of PS2 CD games. However the PS2 CD games can be installed thru the PC hard drive as backup ISOs.

Troublesome CD games such as Half Life that won't install thru HDAdvance can also be installed by the PC backed up ISO method.

Like I said, winhiip works to load ISOs with the HDD removed from the ps2 and hooked to PC Via IDE (and also works with USB2 -> IDE adapters). Hdldump works to load the ISO over a network with the HDD still in the PS2 (much slower, but it works fine). There is an attribute to select in either program that it's a CD game.

I was looking at your guide to HDAdvance/HDLoader and had some questions.

I'm thinking about getting a PS2 modchip installed to play legit import games, but I like the idea of not having to use the disc to play them.

Would I be able to load import games using one of these programs directly with the mod chip installed?

If I have games that are not compatible, can I still play them using the system as normal, playing from the disk?

Where do I get Hdadvance or HDloader? I've seen sites that sell them and others that offer free downloads.

Any info would be appreciated.

Yes it will work, but no Mod Chip is needed if a Flip Top or slide tool is used. For the few games that won't work in the hard drive either a boot disc or the Mod Chip.

Some members here can provide Free MCBoot if you want to go that route. You can also purchase HDAdvance from various Mod Chip Suppliers, all the info in the first page of this Thread.

I'm willing to be you could use something like this.

The eithernet port on the PS2 is capped pretty bad. In my experience the fat ps2's aren't as bad as the slims (if you're looking to use something like openPS2loader and keep the ISO's on your PC). If you're using a hard drive, it works to load ISO's over the network, but it's 10 to 20 times faster to just pull out the HDD, hook it up to a IDE > USB2 adapter, and load your HDLoader ISO's from your PC using WinHIIP.

Not a problem with a wireless adaptor, but sometimes it does have connection issues. I have used a D-Link 3420 Ethernet to Wireless Gaming Adaptor for PS2 online gaming a few years ago. I have since ran Ethernet cables to all the rooms for the fastest and reliable connection. Only time we use wireless is on the laptops. I don't see why a wireless setup would not work for transferring files from the PC to the PS2 hard drive. The direct cable is more reliable though.

I get 2 megabytes per second transferring ISOs to my PS2 over ethernet. A full DVD takes about 22-23 minutes at that speed. If you were doing a large batch transfer it might be easier to swap hard disks, but for just one game it's easier to do it over the network.

THIS. Or a do a direct install.

For me too much a headache pulling the hard drive out just for a game or two. The only time I don't do a direct install is for the troublesome games such as Half Life and God of War. Easily rectified by going the Ethernet method.

thanks guys! this is super helpful and exciting. i've got my ps2 very close to my wireless router in the living room but the laptop is in another room when it's charged or connected to the 1TB USB drive.

this is an awesome guide, CRT, thanks for writing/revising/updating it.
