Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Weight of games

Post by Rebz »

Hey guys I couldn't find anything on this when I searched, I was just wondering if anybody knew what the weight of games are (for shipping purposes). Basically the disc with manual and the box, or the cart only if we're talking cart based. This would be super helpful to me so I'd appreciate it if anybody could help me out, preferably in kg because I'm Canadian (eh).
So what I need are the weights for:

Atari
NES
SNES
N64
Gameboy
GBA
Dreamcast
Saturn
Genesis
Original Xbox
Gamecube
PS1
PS2

Thanks in advance guys!

NES
"an average NES cart weights between 3.5 to 3.7 ounces"
"the converter gyromite carts weighed 4.0 and 4.1 ounces"
"battery pak games with the golden stickers on the back of the carts weigh 3.9 to 4.1 ounces"

Atari 2600 Jr., NES, Gameboy, Genesis 1 and 2, Saturn, Virtual Boy, Gameboy Advance (with Supercard SD), Playstation (With Goldfinger), Nintendo 64, Playstation 2(modded), Nintendo DS (Fat) with Edge

I use these rules of thumb:
-Games inside a CD jewel case, single discs, weigh 4 oz.
-Games inside a DVD case, single discs, weigh 6 oz.

Not good at pseudo-weighing cartridges though, since I'm not much of a cartridge collector.

Hobie-wan's game weight shipping chart

Post by Hobie-wan »

I weighed several games for each item, taking the heaviest I had for each so this should just be a rough guide for figuring postage. In most cases with the complete games it meant an RPG or something with a thick book or a lot of ads and posters. For cart games this also usually meant an RPG with a save battery. Dust sleeves should be self explanatory for NES and SNES and means an official clamshell case for GB and GG. If anyone has a weight to add, let me know and I'll update the spreadsheet and image.

There are far too many variations of PS1 game packaging. :P

Image

A CD case with no artwork is 2.4 oz/.068 kg
A slim CD case with no artwork is 1.5 oz/.042 kg

GC disc is .2 oz/.006 kg
Regular disc is .3 oz/.009 kg

CD sized bubble pack is .5 oz/.014 kg
DVD sized bubble pack is .8 oz/.023 kg

Nice, thanks Hobie. I saved your chart for future reference, very handy.

Fixed pounds to ounces and changed the formula so a loose DS cart didn't end up being 0 on the KG side. Also added link to my sig so it will be easier to find again.

A kid in elementary school told me if you save data on a cartridge it gets heavier. Also, the further you get in the game the heavier the save data becomes.

So you might want to take that into consideration and edit that chart hobie.

So to save on postage, delete game saves? :D
