Thinking about buying a Pi for RetroPie.. Couple questions.

Post by SuperDerpBro »

Thinking about "building" one for my brother and another for my bedroom.

How is the input lag?

Is the Pi3 truly powerful enough to use shaders? My favorite shader for up to 16-bit, GBA and 2D PS1 is crt-easymode in Retro Arch on the PC. I see there is a CRT shader that is made specifically for the Pi called crt-pi. It looks pretty nice.

How well would that run on say Yoshi's Island? Will i get full speed on GBA games running the crt-pi shader? Or is it the kind of "full speed" people say is "perfect" on the PSP or oXbox. (I played a lot of GBA on the oXbox back in the day and it was doable but not full speed a lot of the time).

Bassically ever since i started using crt-easymode i cant play emulated retro games without some sort of CRT shader. If i can't get full speed on the pi3 with the basic crt-pi shader i will have wasted a bunch of time and money hehe.

Thanks :)

Hey SuperDerpBro,

I think the amount of lag you're going to get from using a HDTV is minimal. They all output at 1080 with the HDMI port. There's great interfaces that you can download -- retropie is the default that you'd want but there's some great stuff as shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM38IYc2SJU
The Raspberry Pi 3 is more than power enough to play everything leading up through MAME/Genesis/SNES. N64, PlayStation and up tend to start running into some technical bottlenecks. N64 for some reason has always been a little rough on rendering and playing those games via emulation. Your Mileage May Vary. It's an absolutely wonderful platform to play the "Golden Age" of games and can provide a near limitless library of classic games to play for a ridiculously small profile / footprint.

As far as shaders, there's a lot of options even with RetroPie. Here's a good example of a shader for GBA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH90zhgHiUM\

Anywho, I hope this helps! I think it's a good option if you want to play some games and want to limit yourself from a budgetary/space perspective.

Isn't it typically the case unless you get shoddy controllers, or some bad bluetooth device that lags, it's really just depending on good/bad emulation FPS issues and whatever basic input lag your TV spits out in a case of a Pi box or even a classic or modern system that won't adjust for it.

Did a bit of digging and retro pie has about 1 to 2 frames of lag vs PC. Going PC :)
