I don't like "shmup", or "shoot'em up" but to each their own.

Keio Flying Squadron! I'd played shmups before, but never any that had raccoons in them.

I don't really like "shmup" either. Its a funky word.

I usually consider all of those to be sister genres except FPS, just because there is little to no dodging.

I don't like saying "shooter" though because then people tend to think FPS.

exactly

I've only had one person know what I was talking about when I used the term "shmup" in rl though.

Usually have to reffer to Space Invaders.

I see you've not played any Half-Life multiplayer.

Touche'

Well then, in most cases you aren't dodging bullets, at least in the same fasion as the other genres mentioned.

Although snipers piss me off in all of them

At least back in SoCal, most people I encountered at work would say "eff-p-ess" instead of shooter. Maybe it's a regional thing? Like my cousins on the east coast calling soda, pop.

I remember playing very little in the arcades before that, but I believe I have played Sega's Thunderblade.

Then when we got our Amiga, there were some good games there - possibly the one that I remember most fondly is Silkworm. Co-op!
Also with Co-op and great game, Battle Squadron.

And another early one that I really like is Hybris, and Blood Money is amazing.

SWIV (Silkworm's spiritual sequel) and Apidya are later game but also nice ones.

So possibly the best single answer is Silkworm's Amiga port, but with strong contributions from the others mentioned.

I think many of those hold out very well today as well, and may be not as well known to enthusiasts. I recommended checking out videos of them to check out if you like to try playing them.

Ivo.
