I'm about to round out the series. I have about 40 pages left in Mona Lisa Overdrive. Checked out some of "Spook Country" and it seemed interesting. I might pick it up.

My copy of SSA should arrive today if shipping predictions are correct. Hopefully I will have an update tonight.

update: Got home and the postman left the package at the apartment complex office. The apartment complex is closed for the night. Oh well... at least I have my $3.99 PS2 Deus Ex and $4.99 Robotech Invasion to keep me entertained.

Got it. I played around through Samurai Shodown 1 & 2 a bit.

First the bad:

The arterial spray and cut in half appear to have been removed. :(

The soft focus filter is permanent and cannot be turned off giving the graphics a "played on a really old arcade monitor" look.

No progressive scan mode.

The good:

Buttons can be configured however the hell you want them. No more holding A/B or C/D for hard hits in SS1 and 2.

Engrish is still in.

Game play appears to be arcade perfect, no slodown (heh heh) or glitching.

Still lots of blood loss during rounds.

AI is just as cabinet kicking difficult as I remember.

I don't have to pump in rolls of quarters to beat cabinet kicking difficult AI. :D

yep. The game play is there. And I might be wrong about the "fatalities". Well, kind of wrong. Some guy on gamefaqs was saying that the cut in half and artery spray only happen during 2 player matches... But I'm stuck at work for another hour so I have no way to test.

update: Fatalities work just fine and quite frequently. They only seem to work in VS mode or in Arcade mode when two humans are playing. Could be a glitch... or a sly way to step around ratings and get a T.

Thanks for the info about this game. SamSho-II was always one of my favorite fighters. I never even knew there was a V and VI. I might have to find me a copy of this game.

Might have to get the Japanese version. Too bad the USA one is edited, was the original AES cart censored in other territories?

As I recall, the initial couple of SS AES carts when played on a US AES did have fatalities censored. You can unlock that with the UniBios by setting the console to Japan (or flipping a dip switch I think). That was the fun thing about the AES carts: it was the same cart for all regions, with different code paths for different consoles.

SSA is not completely censored. Buckets of blood are still shed in all forms of gameplay. The fatalities only happen against human players. I think it's the same in the Japanese version.
