List of Every GBC Black Cart (dual compatibility) game

by nightrnr Wed May 27, 2015 6:43 pm

I posted this a while back right in the middle of another topic; thought it deserved it's own space.

To be clear, I have my own parameters for this list. Yes, I KNOW Pokemon Yellow is an original Game Boy game. It makes the list because of its dual compatibility (has a special Game Boy Color mode: changes color scheme based on location and can display more than the standard 4 colors at one time; maxes out at 6 colors I think, but every pokemon retains their own color palette).
I'm also making an exception for the other 2 GBC Pokemon games and the oversize carts (different shape or color than the standard black carts).

I think the list is fairly comprehensive (North American releases only), but I'm bound to be missing a few (so please let me know if there are any more that you guys know of).
I may even add pics of each game at some point (not that I'll even own more than a fraction of them, but I can copy paste well enough  ).

Reasons for the list and/or my fascination with the games:
- I couldn't find a complete list anywhere else (please link one if there is one you know of)
- It's one of the early examples of downward compatibility (Sega and Atari have got it beat if nothing else)
- Black GBC games represent a tie between generations
---(GB users had the basic gameplay while GBC users had an enhanced experience)
- It made the original Game Boy (and pocket) still relevant for way longer than I ever though possible
- It shows how cool Nintendo was
- The games are possibly playable on the widest range of platforms
---GB,GBP, GBC, GBA, GBA-SP, Super Game Boy (SNES), Game Boy Player (Gamecube), and even through the N64 Transfer pak, if you just count Pokemon Yellow/Silver/Gold)

Awesome list. I love stuff like this.

It's also nice to know I can play all three Mary Kate & Ashley games on a monochrome Game Boy.

Yes, otherwise the universe would surely be imbalanced  .

I have some other ideas for game lists (mainly involving generation gaps/bridges in games and platform crossing), but they take more time than I'm ready to devote right now.

Thanks for the list. Very interesting. Nintendo did some cool things indeed.

Updated my list (added some games and removed a couple errors).

I think the list is more or less complete for NA releases.
Wikipedia and RFGeneration were a big help.
Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Cobi's Journey/Tara's Adventure was the last releases for the black cart format in 2001.

Part of me wants to collect the entire set..., I think the black carts just look neat.
...but even though many of these games go for cheap, it would still be like a $1000 investment (and I can find better uses for that).
I did just add Classic Bubble Bobble to my physical collection, had that on my radar forever. My collection stands at 24 games at my last count.

More likely, I will throw these on my GB everdrive and use it on my Super Gameboy. (along with other Gameboy selections of course).
4 folders:
Favorites (by genre)
Game Boy (standard carts)
SGB enhanced (grey carts, + Pokemon R/B and DKL games)
GBC games (black carts, + Pokemon Silver/Gold/Yellow)

I could go further and see which Black carts have SGB support, but I thought there was already a list like that somewhere... (I know there's a list of border art at videogamemuseum).
