I don't know why but I want a 7800

Post by TheRev »

My set up lacks Atari goodness. So I wouldn't mind a 7800 with Euro controllers.

Plus it's not entirely unlrealistic to get every game for it and it plays 2600 games. Bummer there is no Atari Slot in the Retron5...maybe the retron 6?

It's a nice system. I can't wait for the Harmony 2 or whatever it gets called, I need me my 7800 flash cart.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed
Chronically out of date BST thread

had no idea such a thing was coming. But from what I can tell it's not impossible to own every 7800 game. Every 2600 game now that's a daunting task.

The older "wood grain" 2600 console is more robust as far as inserting and removing carts, but of course it won't work with the 7800 games. I bring this up because it really has a better "feel" with the internal metal support around the cart slot, the carts slip in and out so much better compared to the 2600 Jr and 7800.

That stated, the 7800 is a nice system for its exclusives and especially as the only console that has two player simultaneous mode on many of the 80s Arcade Classics. The euro gamepad is not very common, but over half of the 7800 games work with the huge range of 2600 Joysticks.

I suppose A master system controller would work too.

I might start looking into this, The Retron has no love for Atari so it's probably a good idea to look into a 7800.

The 7800 is a super fun machine to collect for. Relatively cheap too. Though as dsh has pointed out, some games are super expensive and/or hard to find (Commando comes to mind).

You should check out AtariAge for some homebrew if you get one too. There are a good 15 or so extra games to find there. The port of SCRAMBLE is really pretty excellent too.

Also, don't overhype yourself on those euro pads. They're better than the US joysticks but they're still awful. :P

Sadly Hyperkin has sated in the past that there is no easy way to get the connectors for Atari carts, so it is unlikely we will ever get a Retron that has Atari components.

Those will work for games that only need a single button but for others (i.e. Commando, Scrapyard Dog, Ninja Golf), you'll need either a Pro-Line stick or the joypad. Personally I use a modded NES controller which works far better than either controller.
