Do you guys think this would be a good tv for older game play (including light guns)? It has component cable and s video input and all!

Question; when a seller says that the tv is "HD-ready" does that mean that the tv itself is in hd? These two tv's look very pretty, and have a nice price tag, but their specs seem to not clearly say if they are HD.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Toshiba-36-HD-Ready ... 20affaeffe

(That 46 incher sounds damn nice, and its in driving distance to me, but i think where in the specs it said its output was 1080i, that makes the use of lightguns impossible?)

edit; question forgotten to ask previously. I have a genesis to scart to component connection for my genesis/32x/cd. I hardly play lethal enforcers and haven't touched my blue justifier for years, so I'm not too worried about loosing access to that game if the component output from my genesis doesn't work on my inevitable tv (made to work with dreamcast/saturn light guns).

The scart to component conversion is merely to make my pretty genesis games look uber, putting them out at 480. Does this do anything to the reception for a light gun? I've been wanting to get a saturn & dreamcast scart cable for this setup too, but haven't gotten around to it. I would love a prettier picture, but not if it means I can't play specific games.

This one good to go since Samsung only goes to 480i. Any Non-HD CRT will work with the older lightguns.

Both the Toshibas are HD will not work with older Lightguns. The "HD-Ready" usually means its ready to receive HD broadcast signals out of the box, no additional tuner needed. Again, not Lightgun Compatible unless you purchase a "Sensor Bar" Lightgun.

As long as you use a Non-HD CRT you have a good though not positive chance of the older Lightgun working. The Dreamcast does have VGA capability which also Supports Lightguns.

Ah quite long thread and it took considerable amount of time of mine. But it worth it. As it has very good information and I am happy to read it as I will tell all this among my friends and will get proud to show my knowledge which is more than them. :D

This is an extremely helpful article. I have the same exact Sony 32" TV and I love everything about it except its weight. I have the matching bottom half shelving also which looks great. PS2 using component looks very good with clear images on games that support 480p. The Xbox 360 is in component at 720p so it automatically put it on wide screen support which took the 4:3 32" screen to a 29.4" (estimate) 16:9 screen with black bars. The thing I don't understand is when I have the Wii hooked up with component and switch over to 480p as well as changing 4:3 to 16:9, why doesn't the TV read the change like it does with the Xbox 360? And why does it revert itself back to 4:3 when you switch the option to 16:9 when you turn the TV off?

Congratulations as another owner of one of the few great 4:3 HD CRTs. Yes extremely heavy, I don't plan on moving it ever again, all connections are being used, with 3 additional external switch boxes.

In the menu setting, I leave the 16:9 widescreen setting to AUTO not ON. I noticed the image gets reduced at the ON setting. Unfortunately no zoom as in a computer monitor. WEGA tries to auto compensate the image in 16:9 AUTO and stays reduced at 16:9 ON. The AUTO mode sometimes is finicky, but its better then being stuck with 16:9 reduced image. Too bad there is no 16:9 OFF mode.

As for the Wii, nearest I can figure is maybe an Anamorphic signal confusing the HD.

First a little trivia.
Whenever you purchase a DVD movie always buy one that is Anamorphic Wide Screen. On a regular Wide Screen all the screen is utilized; no black bars. On the WEGA 4:3 HD the image fills in the whole screen by vertical stretch; again no black bars. This of course works if the DVD player is set to 16:9 widescreen. To add to the mess my older jog shuttle DVD player in 16:9 mode temporarily gives that anamorphic full screen stretch then split second later, jumps back down to normal widescreen with black bars top and bottom.

DVDs that are Non-Anamorphic can never be stretched to fill the entire screen without zooming and sacrificing loss of image quality.

I have noticed when setting a PS2 God of War to widescreen, you see more screen, still full but now seemingly stretched vertically or rather sides squashed into view. Prefer 4:3 to keep Kratos looking normal. Another game Tomb Raider Anniversary looks cleaner at 480p, but with black bars all the way around. Maybe that particular game's setting?

Okay back to the Wii.
Basically you are doing a similar trick as in above with a DVD player set to 16:9 mode. HD 4:3 tries to fill screen with stretch but since your HD is a true 4:3, tricky to keep a full image anamorphic. Screen trickery similar to my older jog shuttle DVD player or like Tomb Raider not utilizing all screen real estate. Probably best to set the Wii at 4:3 480p and enjoy all the HD CRT real estate. Video games are not really pan and scan as in a badly dubbed movie. The side imagery designed for wide screen; that is off the 4:3 screen, doesn't have too much effect on game play.

I suspect the other Plasma vote is Niode's.
Hobie, info on yours? How's the Retro consoles look on Plasma?

For the most part I think they look pretty good. It will accept and scale 1080i, but it's only ED at 852x480 for the actual resolution. This may help the older consoles look good, or maybe I'm just less picky. Older 'flicker' type shadows usually don't look too great, though it varies by system and whether the shadow is moving or not. Some of these are from memory as they're not hooked up right now, but anyway.

SMS - composite - Some looks ok, some like reds bleed really bad.
Genesis - composite - Looks like ass like you'd expect. Hopefully an s-video mod will help whenever I get to it.
NES - composite - Looks ok. It depends on the colors used and the contrast between them. Some combinations give pretty well defined pixels, some edges have what looks like a freeze frame of dot crawl when the picture is still.
PCE/TG-16 - composite - Looks pretty good, some of the same edge issues as the NES, but overall looks better than the NES image.

SNES / N64 / PS1 / Saturn - s-video - These all look great IMHO.

Thanks. Looks like there is another Plasma owner. A very low total vote. I should have put up this TV vote when first creating this Thread. So far surprisingly CRT is still ahead, thought LCD would be on top. Still a lotta devoted Retro owners that prefer CRT?
