Best Need for Speed? (1994-2008)

What's the best Need for Speed game from the PS2-era (so including Undercover and Pro Street, which got PS2 releases) and earlier? Do the originals hold up? I never played anything after Underground 1, should I? What are the basic differences among the good ones? Any definitely worth avoiding?

I understand that later entries are better, but for those without a 360 or later, what would you recommend them play?

Hot Pursuit 2 & Most Wanted are both excellent, the latter being probably the best loved game in the franchise (though I dig the more recent Rivals more). They both emphasize cop chases, which is my favorite part of the series.

Although I could check out some of the Xbox/360 Forza's, I end up thinking Need for Speed might be my gateway back into racing games someday.

I really dig Hot Pursuit on the ps1. Never played the second one that dsheinem mentioned, I'd assume it's like the first only better looking.

It might be a good idea for me to start there and get the later ones later. Most Wanted was just a little too late for me, so I may look into that, too. There's not a whole lot of info comparing them all, which is a shame; for surely getting them all would be a waste of time and money.

Need for Speed III is the one I played growing up, loved it. The music was awesome and still sticks with me.

Going to have to pick Carbon for this. Man reason I pick this one is because I was oddly really good at winning on this one. Normally I suck at racing games.

Everyone knows the original on 3DO is the best. It's also got more cheese than a stuffed crust pizza.

The newest is $7.50 for the Deluxe (assume this means season pass) version on Xbox One. I grabbed it. Any good?
