Visual Novels
Re: Visual Novels
I should pick up where I left off in Higurashi!
I've played through a few using VNDS on various devices (NDS, PSP, Android). It's nice to have them on-the-go. Too bad the download repository I knew about is no longer up - conversion is a pain.

There's a patch which replaces the character art (and optionally, backgrounds) with the anime style but better shaded (ripped from the PS2 release). I like the mitten-hands sprites .

Re: Visual Novels
It's not something I dip into too often, but occasionally I'll find one I enjoy. I really enjoyed the Ace Attorney series, but that was mostly due to falling in love with the characters, even though not all of the games are gems in terms of how well their logic puzzles fit together. Miles Edgeworth Investigations is one to very safely skip, imo. Story just really isn't there, and they sorta ruin a great character by him being in the game too much (i.e., the titular main character himself). Ace Attorney's 1, 3 and 4 are fantastic though. Can't recommend them enough. 2 has a chronic lack of Maya and Edgeworth, so it's by far the worst of the original DS ones though.
I also really enjoyed Hatoful Boyfriend, but that just may be me. I like to take sillier visual novels like that and show them to friends, and we'll take turns voicing the characters. Very funny stuff X3
Also my younger sibling LOVES Steins; Gate. It's their favorite thing ever and there's nothing Steins; Gate related that isn't in this home on a shelf somewhere.

You should check out Jurassic Heart. That's a great one.
