I would love to see you tackle something truly weird like ZPC, if you can find a working copy.

I'd be more than happy to, if there were a way I could acquire it legally through a service like Steam or GOG. As it is, some of the more obscure FPS titles I've recently picked up, like NAM, Last Rites, and Z.A.R. somehow have gotten Steam releases. The downside is that they often have screwy metadata, so their release dates are messed up, and I have to scrub through the last 15 years worth of FPS games on the service to find the hidden stuff like this.

Also, NAM sucks. It sucks hard.

I think our own troops got hit by fewer airstrikes. I seem to attract them like flies in this game. I'd be walking around, just like, "Oh hi, checkpoi-" AIRSTRIKE.

I see a gun by a Viet Cong I just killed. "Let me grab-" AIRSTRIKE.

Walk into my own base- AIRSTRIKE.

Boot up the game and- AIRSTRIKE.

Power on my computer- AIRSTRIKE.

It's a little frustrating.

Well, it is available on the Internet Archive...

I mean, it's basically abandonware at this point, sadly.

Bought Prey (2017) for $10. OMG this game is good. I played for 10 hours straight on Sunday. I do not ever play games for that long these days.

If you enjoy System Shock, Bioshock, Alien Isolation and to some degree, Metroid Prime, check this game out.

Well, there is limited information out there about Last Rites, but I have been making steady progress. I'm now on level 7 of 10 from what I have found, and while there are definitely problems due to the age, it's still an interesting if unusual FPS.

First, it starts out with a somewhat generic post-apocalyptic storyline featuring a zombie Holocaust. However, it's also a bit futuristic, with robots and sci-fi firearms filling out the armory alongside the uzi, shotgun, and missile launcher. The first half deals more with setting up defenses, clearing out a safe zone, and gathering supplies for your military force.

The second half features more science fiction elements, starting with going into the sewers to hunt mutant bug hives alongside the zombies and aggressive rats that wander down there. Level 7 involves me protecting a robot that is being sent in to gather info on some kind of weapon system revolving around a portal...the plot took a sudden left turn with some kind of supervillain that had never been mentioned before.

In many missions, I have been given an AI squad to help, which for 1997 is pretty impressive. They're less dumb than Daikatana, folks! Though that isn't saying much, and they still ain't brilliant either. But they can generally provide back up firepower and don't take damage if I accidentally shoot one, so it works for me. The game also doesn't seem to care if they survive either, so that's fine.

Unfortunately, there are a couple of escort missions, and the little robot I have to protect is both zombie bait and dumb and worst of all fast moving. The first time, I got ahead of it to kill what was in its way. Level 7 is the second time, and it's still dumb and harder to get ahead of. Not gonna enjoy this level

Ooh, the retro FPS renaissance continues. Wrath: Aeon of Ruin has just released in Early Access on Steam.

Fellas, we need to talk...about Descent 3.

Like, ok, it's a Descent game. Descent games are good games. But this feels like it didn't actually understand what Descent was doing. Adding in a story, voice acting, mission parameters beyond blowing up the virus-infected CPU core...these all seem to miss the point. And the level design is no longer "here's a mine dug up by robots." In the first two games, it felt believable to say that drone robots had hewn the levels from rock; there was a bizarre elegance to them of often narrow corridors and massive rooms with no real sense of up or down, designed by some algorithm that makes perfect sense to their AI but not necessarily to a human being.

Descent 3 isn't like that. It's got the basics, and what it does is not necessarily bad, but it doesn't feel like Descent.

Anyone else have some thoughts?

My thought is I still need to play Descent 2, but from what I've heard Descent 3 was the bridge between the mines of Descent and the open space of Freespace.
