2D Platformers best for Speedrunning that's not Nintendo

Post by arcadifvid »

ive been thinking of taking a shot at the speedrunning gaming thanks watching the AGDQ marathons. what do you guys think are the games best suited for speedrunning? usually i see mario mario mario mario metroid mario mario . of course megaman and castlevania here and there. but there's got to be more than these with wealth of 2D platformers we have.

the only game (in recent memory) that i could finish in under 10 mins is Duck Tales. i prefer games that can be finished between 10 -30 mins. anyone have their own speed run records?

I haven't seen any speedruns for this, but I imagine Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers would be suitable. You could do a co-op speedrun!

2D platformer known for speed? C'mon, this question practically answers itself: Sonic the Hedgehog is the obvious choice. You can complete Green Hill Zone Act 1 in less than sixty seconds.

the Sonic games are pretty amazing to watch speedruns of, pretty cool to see sonic played by a good player.

Sonic 1 and 2 are the obvious choices here, mainly the 1st zone of each game. (Sonic 3's levels just aren't quick enough.)

I remember being 7 years old, playing Sonic 1, Green Hill zone for 1st time. That music started playing and I thought wow this is way faster than Mario! I could barely keep up. It was a shock to say the least
They have escaped into the mansion where they thought it was safe, yet.

I used to be able to beat Ninja Gaiden (NES) in about 30 mins.

Other good choices:

NES Games
Castlevania (series)
Contra (series)
Ghosts N Goblins
Journey to Silius
Megaman (series)
Metal Storm
Street Fighter 2010
Werewolf

SNES Games
Castlevania IV
Contra III
Cybernator
Demon's Crest
Earthworm Jim (series)
Joe & Mac
Magic Sword
Super Ghouls N Ghosts
Super Turrican
Super Valis IV

Any side-scrolling Metal Slug game would be good too.

Abe's Exodus (I'm serious, try doing a speedrun for a trial and error game)

Great game, but neither 2D nor a platformer. I guess God Hand isn't the answer to everything like I thought it was.
