Retro DS Platformers

Post by o.pwuaioc »

I recently got a DS (about time, right?), and so immediately dove into some of the classic franchises. I found two different branches, however. The first is my style, like Contra 4. This has all the feel of the NES/SNES games with of course the necessary additions which make it a DS game. The other style is the modern style. Ninja Gaiden and Metroid Prime Hunters is not at all like the NES games. With that in mind, what are some of the better retro DS platformers?

List so far:

Aliens: Infestation
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Contra 4
Giana Sisters DS
Henry Hatsworth in The Puzzling Adventure
Legend of Kage 2
Legend of Starfy
Mega Man ZX
Mega Man ZX Advent
Metal Slug 7
New Super Mario Bros.
Sonic Rush
Super Princess Peach
Yoshi's Island DS

This is a no-brainer, but get the three Castlevania games!

Mega Man ZX is pretty good, it's kinda like a cross between the Mega Man X series, Mega Man Zero series and Metroidvania style games. It's really quite fun, it had a sequel called Mega Man ZX Advent, although I haven't played it. Mega Man ZX is definatly worth it though if you like Mega Man X.

Henry Hatsworth in The Puzzling Adventure
Legend of Kage 2

are both fun, "old-style" games.

Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword is more of a beat-em-up, but it is still very fun. In any event, the DS has a great library; so, you are in for some good times.

Not everyone like it, but there's always Yoshi's Island DS. Plays and looks like a SNES game.

Henry Hatsworth is a must have. I didn't think I'd like it because of the puzzle stuff but it's really cleverly implemented.

Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent (which fixes some of the issues with the original but a lot of people like the first more) are both great and if you don't have them yet for GBA, the Zero Collection is a bargain.

How about New Super Mario Bros... Is that too obvious of a pick?

Super Princess Peach is also a 2D platformer.

Aliens: Infestation is a bit of a Contra-ish run-and-gun.

Giana Sisters DS is basically a port of the C64 game, can't get more retro than that.

I haven't tried any of the Kirby games yet...

^Funnily enough, I thought I had listed NSMB next to Contra 4 as my other example. I wonder why I skipped over it.
