The Valis games are a lot like the early Castlevania games. Limited mobility, small range of attacks, and a couple of power ups to mitigate your weaknesses.

It's like Simon Belmont dressed as a Japanese school girl.
The PSTV is amazing.

I remember Cadash being very castlevania-like - one character even has a whip.

If you have an interest in Japanese doujin games, I would recommend you try out the Koumajou Densetsu games (1. Scarlet Symphony and 2. Stranger's Requiem).

Interesting mix of well done original graphics and blatently stolen Castlevania graphics. But then it got to the boss fight. I like a good bullet hell, but I don't want bullet hell in my Metroidvania.
