Large Collection for Sale. Around 1,000 games. Most new.

by damor99 Mon May 22, 2017 6:12 am

I've worked in the game industry since 1990. A friend has worked in it since 1982 or thereabouts and asked me to sell some of his old games as he was moving home. He had about 2,000 games and I grabbed 1,000.

Lots of old, interesting vintage games. Apple II to PlayStation. A lot are still sealed. We had to cut old vines so we could get to them, which gives you an idea of how old they are.

Anyway, perhaps some fun things for people to take a look at. This is my auction and this is my son's, who's helping me sell them. We'll keep adding items over the coming weeks and months.

Here's an album of some of them.

You happen to have anything Gameboy/Color or Famicom in that entire lot of stuff? I see you're PAL region so that's limiting.

It's a mix of US, JP and EU.

No Famicom and not a lot of Super Famicom. Mostly PC, Amiga, Genesis, Saturn, Mega CD, 3DO, PlayStation.

Are you planning to post a list of the whole lot before it goes on eBay? I'm in PAL region and I'd be interested in seeing what you have. Maybe you could avoid the eBay fees on some things too?

I'm pretty interested in what might be in there, too. :)

Very cool to see this! Impressed with all the sealed items!
Best of success on this :) Feel free to update us on the thread with how the process goes. I'm always curious about the back-end of stuff on projects like this :)

In fact, if you want to do an interview or anything about the backstory and process for the site, lemme know.

THIS! By all means a detail story history with pictures before you sell out the collection. I see a lot of imports in your pictures, some that have my curiosity on the developer background.

I'm happy to share a backstory.

My friend Mark was an early employee at Electronic Arts. I'd guess 1982. Back in the day when Trip was running it and it and the developers were 'artists', hence the gatefold sleeves. As far as I can tell, it was a Californian, laid back, weed-smoking company. Different from the EA of today.

Mark and his colleague David were given the job of setting up EA outside of North America so they moved to London in about 1985. They'd find distribution partners for EA games and find European developers to be published by EA. He'd always be sent US samples and take European demos back to the US, including Bullfrog which he was an enormous fan of and subsequently bought. Origin, Maxis, Broderbund etc.

I joined the UK office in 1993. Trip had gone to 3DO by then. The European operation had really grown and Mark had set up an Australian and Japanese office. The Japanese office was particularly tricky to get working well but finally got up and running with partnership with Japan Victor Company (JVC). I joined as a producer, making all sorts of games on all sorts of platforms

I got to know Mark and looked after his cats while he was away. It was an awesome house with an Aladdin's cave of games, some of which you can see here. He also gave me all the PlayStation samples he was given to evaluate for European distribution which I traded to feed my Japanese import N64 habit.

Mark left EA in around 2003. He lives in California and the Caribbean mostly now. He still had his house in the UK which he hadn't been to in around five years, so he decided to sell it. The games were well stored in a building that we had to chop down vines to get to. I was able to fit about a third of them in my car; another friend took the others. It's great to see so many of the old gatefold games still sealed 35 years later!
