Article on TurboGrafx-16 25th Anniversary

From Gamasutra. It should be worth your time, it has a lot of "did you know" moments. The reason it failed apparently wasn't all the fault of NEC's US branch.

Just turned off the PC Engine Duo. The TurboGrafx-16 is a permanent fixture to my television. Long live NEC.

just finished reading it.

So sad that they couldn't market it better.

So many missed opportunities.

This article is a great read. It's sad, because I certainly remember the TG-16 existing as a kid. Yet, we (my group of peers) all thought it was this weird, esoteric thing with no games of which to speak in comparison to the Genesis and SNES--that is if some of us had even heard of it at all. The only game I can specifically recall hearing about was Bonk. I suppose that's a testament to the poor marketing.

I like they linked to a Racketboy post in the article.

Same. For me it existed within this vague group of "failed consoles" along with the Jaguar, CD-I, 3DO, etc... I never even saw a TG16 until 2010 or so.

I watch YouTube videos of these guys like the Happy Console Gamer talking about how they bought a Turbo CD at launch or some shit. Blows my mind. Talk about being ahead of the game haha.

I didn't see that, what page was it on?

I liked the Computer Chronicles episode they threw in there.

Sega guy: We got Michael Jackson and Mickey Mouse.
NEC guy: We got YS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*everyone's 1990 mind is blown*

Interesting article. Turbografx had so many missteps. I guess it's easy to spot these problems in hindsight, but if any of us were in their shoes, could we have done better?
