I think retro, at least as I see it, is best shown by genres. Platformers, fighters, shmups, beat 'em ups, survival horror, arena shooters, competitive puzzlers and roguelikes are some genres I'd consider retro regardless of age, DLC, online functionality, etc.

Online was there, but consoles weren't built around it like they are now. Technically, there were download-only games in the 80s, but they were an oddity.

Any console you buy now more or less expects a broadband internet connection, and offers a fair bit of content you can't get without one. There's a huge difference, in that regard, between a PS2 and a PS3. Not so much between a PS3 and a PS4.

Pretty much every genre you mentioned never stopped getting made. If they're considered retro purely on those merits, it'd be, perhaps, because the heyday for the style has passed. However, what would you classify games that remove the advancements of the genre as then? IE, a fighter that doesn't have super meters, counters, cancels, and whatever other elements that nearly anything now incorporates? That would be retro. A 2D fighter in general is just niche.

What about all those 1080i PS2 games :3

What, GT4? mew

also i just wanted to haiku. interlacing hurts muh ballz. iBallz, that is.

You can't forget Valkyrie Profile 2.

I actually think it's rather perplexing that the system didn't offer 720p on any of those titles. Just 480i/p and 1080i. Very strange. (I think one of the 1080i games didn't even support 480p)

Anyone who doesn't believe the PS2 is retro in 2015 is living in a fantasy world.

There's no hard and fast rule on what Retro is, so it's whatever you want it to be.

We should come up with a hard and fast rule.

I say, if it's not being manufactured anymore, it's retro. Easy peasy, no arguments or varying interpretations, etc.

Anyone who defines something as retro lives ina fantasy world.

...which means all of us, since we're a part of a site to a guide to retro gaming.

The real question is "Is the XBOX Deus Ex Machina" Truly next gen?

Well, maybe we can define "retro" as something that gives you nostalgia, because if it still feels current then it will not give you nostalgia. Do you feel nostalgic when you play PS2 games like Shadow of the Colossus and GTA 3 ?

That's up to personal interpretation, though. We can't have any of that.

I feel far more nostalgic over GTA III than something like Centipede.

When I first joined I would have (and did before) said no. Nowadays? Yes. It's two Playstations ago, and I don't know a single person IRL who still plays PS2. Most people who still like certain PS2 games just get the HD versions on PS3.

Though there's still the odd store here and there that still sells the GTA Trilogy brand new. Can't explain that.

So, if a system isn't being played anymore, that means it's retro?

So the Xbox One and PS Vita are retro now?
